Mill Creek Ridge Milestone

Latest acquisition completes 10-year conservation effort

By acquiring 115 acres in February, Columbia Land Trust completed a decade-long effort to conserve more than 400 contiguous acres of oak-and-pine woodlands and native wildflower meadows along Mill Creek Ridge. Located southwest of The Dalles in Wasco County, Oregon, the ridge offers vital habitat to pollinators and birds such as Lewis's woodpeckers. Learn More.

For a unique opportunity to see Mill Creek Ridge's wildflowers in bloom, join us for our Making Meadows Tour on April 23rd.

Building Backyard Habitats

A living landbase on 82nd Avenue

Backyard Habitat Certification Program staff were honored this winter when the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO) invited them to partner on a pilot project in Portland’s Jade District. In January and February, the groups worked with local residents to design and install habitat-friendly gardens in two prominent community spaces along SE 82nd Avenue. Learn More.

A New Bird's Eye View

Drones help monitor changing conditions on restoration projects

At Kandoll Farm in the Grays Bay watershed, it's nearly impossible to traverse more than 100 acres of muddy wetland terrain on foot. That's one reason we're using drones and advanced aerial imaging technologies to monitor invasive weeds and other changes in the landscape. Learn More.

Photo of the Month

In February, enthusiastic volunteers helped count amphibian egg masses at our Indian Jack Slough property near Cathlamet, Washington. The surveyors encountered more than 2,000 egg masses belonging to Northern red-legged frogs, northwestern salamanders, long-toed salamanders, and pacific tree frogs. Photo by Paul Peloquin

Did You Know?

Mason bees pollinate 95% of the flowers they visit, while honey bees only pollinate 5%.

In February, the Backyard Habitat Certification Program and Land Trust board member Janet Gifford held a workshop on mason bees and helped distribute 400 cocoons to fellow BHCP participants. Learn more about these important pollinators.
