At Frenchman Bay Conservancy, we are gearing up for a productive, fun, and event-filled season! Over the past five years, Frenchman Bay Conservancy has increased preserve and easement acres by more than 60% and increased miles of trail by 50%, to nearly 25 miles of publicly accessible trails in Hancock County. To ensure that we continue to maintain high-quality trails for Mainers and out-of-state visitors alike, we are hiring a seasonal Environmental Steward through the Maine Conservation Corps this summer, to assist Frenchman Bay Conservancy with preserve and trail maintenance and expansion of our volunteer base. The Environmental Steward will provide a tremendous amount of capacity to the organization over the course of the summer and into the fall! In addition to our usual lineup of hikes, Monday Night Music, Friday Night Lecture Series, and other activities, Frenchman Bay Conservancy will also be holding the grand openings for THREEnew preserves this summer! Taft Point Preserve in Gouldsboro will be opening June 25, the Schoodic Trail Connector in Sullivan will be opening July 8 or 9, and the Bean Island Preservein Sorrento will be opening on August 7. Recently, Frenchman Bay Conservancy has updated its mission statement,
The mission of Frenchman Bay Conservancy is to conserve distinctive ecosystems and landscapes for the benefit of all, from the Union River and Frenchman Bay watersheds east to the Hancock County line.
The purpose of the updated mission statement is to more clearly describe the goal of FBC, which is land conservation both for the benefit of biodiversity and outdoor recreation opportunities for people as well as where we focus our efforts, which includes a more than 1,100 square mile area.
Finally, Frenchman Bay Conservancy and the City of Ellsworth are teaming up for a Card Brook Clean-Up Event on Saturday, April 30 starting at 9:30 am at the Hannaford in Ellsworth. Breakfast treats will be provided along with a raffle of gift cards to local businesses following the clean-up. Check out the flyer for more details, we hope you can join us!
