Welcome to the monthly e-bulletin from Think Global, the UK education charity working to create a more just and sustainable world through the power of global learning.

Teachers need more 'Prevent' support

The type of headline children see. (In this case, he wasn't a 'bomber'.)A survey of teachers by Think Global has revealed that they want more support to help create safe spaces for children to talk about difficult global issues such as extremism and terrorism.

Think Global asked 100 teachers drawn from our members and others involved in protecting children how they were coping with the new duty on schools to protect young people from radicalisation. The teachers said they are:
  • Confident in safeguarding children against the risks of radicalisation, just as they are with other safeguarding issues.
  • Much less confident in how to create a safe space within the school for children to discuss difficult global issues – to empower young people to think for themselves about issues of tolerance, conflict, and interdependence.

Think Global’s Chief Executive, Tom Franklin, said, “The news is full of difficult global issues – war, radicalisation, conflict, terrorism. Teachers need support to create safe spaces for pupils, to be able to explore their ideas and concerns.”

Consumer Classroom

New European project

Consumer Classroom logoThink Global is excited to announce our participation in another new European project. Consumer Classroom is an interactive community website providing advice and resources for teachers on how to help students become informed and responsible consumers.

Managed by French NGO ‘Expertise France’, the project team includes partners from all across Europe, and aims to create a sharing space where teachers can learn from and advise each other on consumer issues as they appear across diverse curricula.

Head of Programmes Monika Kruesmann said “This is a really great opportunity to further build our expertise and networks for sustainability education. Because it is a website-based project, we’re also really looking forward to sharing our expertise with online resources, which we keep updated with our popular Global Dimension Website.”
