A Day Apart

On Saturday, April 9th, a group of Centralites will gather at Burr Oak Lodge to spend A Day Apart, with God and in community. The day will be spent learning and practicing prayer and reflection on scripture. If you'd like more information, or if you know you definitely want to sign up, send an email!

Central Conversations: Racism

Race and Racism are tough topics to confront, but we think it's an important conversation to have. On Sunday, April 10th, we will be hosting a conversation meant to offer opportunity to ask questions, listen, and gain a better understanding of our sisters and brothers who experience living as people of color in this country. This is the first of, what we hope will be, many conversations, and it will go from 4:00-7:00pm. If you'd like more information about the event, send an e-mail. If you'd like to go ahead and sign up to attend, please click HERE

"The community of Good Works is once again filled with gratitude at the love and support we received at the 2016 Good Works WALK. What a beautiful day it was! We want to extend a big "Thank You" to Central for hosting and supporting two of the walks this year.

"About 450 adults and children participated in several different WALK experiences, followed by a reflection time and a rice and beans lunch, sponsored by the Boy Scouts. Each WALK was developed to inspire people to grow in compassion, to learn more about the struggles of the children and the adults who are experiencing poverty and homelessness in Athens.

"This Is Life helped participants understand 19 different factors that people are born into, which profoundly impact their ability to negotiate opportunities and hardship. The Mini Walk focused on five different innovative organizations in Athens County that are doing good things that everyone should know about.

"How The Timothy House Works helped the participants better understand what the Timothy House does, as well as the particular struggles of the many people who experience rural homelessness. Many former residents shared different aspects of their stories of hope.

"What It's Like To Be Homeless was a simulation for adults and children to better understand the challenges and difficulties people face as they cope with rural poverty. The financial goal for the WALK was $60,000 which translates as about 1/3 of the costs to operate Timothy House. We are on our way!"

Good Works, Inc. is an non-profit working in Athens County to create and sustain a community of hope with and for people who are struggling with poverty and homelessness in Appalachia.

On February 20, Good Works held their annual WALK, with Central's locations being used throughout the day, and with the participation of many Centralites!
At Central Avenue Church, we believe in prayer and we believe that there is power in coming together as a body to pray for our community and our world. We want to be a church that regularly engages in the act and the practice of prayer.

Here are some of the topics we're thinking about this week:
BODY OF BELIEVERS:
MARRIAGES - Amongst our body, there are couples new to marriage and couples more seasoned in marriage, and there are couples preparing for marriage. We pray that whatever season they may be in, that they would find peace and trust and endurance in their partnerships.

LOCAL COMMUNITY:
FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS FOOD PANTRY - Friends & Neighbors are at a turning point in their ministry. Next week, a group from Central will take their monthly trip to deliver food collected this weekend, as well as $500 worth of food as part of our commitment from the Christmas Eve offering. We pray that the leadership of the pantry find wisdom and seek counsel in the transition, and that the pantry and our offerings would meet a need and answer prayers for provision.

WIDER WORLD:
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - We pray for our sisters & brothers who are living in a dangerous situation at home, and for those who offer them refuge. In particular, we pray for My Sister's Place, a local agency that helps women in crisis in Athens County.

REFUGEES - We pray for those fleeing Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan who are heading toward Europe with no guarantee they will be accepted. We pray specifically for the children, for safety, for shelter, for food and water.
