Michigan's Children Examines Governor's Budget for Impact on Kids, Youth, Families

State legislators have been discussing Governor Snyder’s fiscal year 2017 budget in their appropriation subcommittees since the $10.2 billion general fund spending plan was unveiled last month.  To help advocates and others identify how his proposals will impact young children and families and youths, Michigan’s Children has created new Budget Briefs on the issues. Read these along with new one-pagers that outline our policy priorities for FY2017 including Early On, expanded learning and family literacy.

Find the reports on Michigan Children's Budget Basics webpage.

Be Well-Informed:  Kids Count Data Coming

The 2016 Kids Count in Michigan Data Book will be released soon with county-by-county information on the status of children in Michigan and regional trends.  This annual resource has been an effective tool for child and family advocates seeking reliable data and information to bolster their community concerns with policymakers.

Learn more about how you can add your voice to this release by registering for a March 14th pre-release webinar starting at 1:30 p.m. The webinar will detail how you can help with the media release of the Data Book and access materials prior to its March 21 release.

For more info, contact Alicia Guevara Warren, Kids Count Project Director, at aliciagw@mlpp.org.  MLPP, Michigan’s Children and many other Kids Count partners can help you to best utilize the Data Book and other information about children, youth and families in your community for advocacy throughout 2016 as well.

Great News:  It's a Girl and another Girl!

Michigan's Children is expanding!  Senior policy analyst Mina Hong and her family welcomed baby Emmie, born Tuesday, and weighing in at 7 lbs., 8 ozs.  Mother and child are doing great. Besides mom and dad, Emmie joins older brother Lennon, who’s 2 ½ years old.

In December, President/CEO Matt Gillard and his family welcomed baby Pearl, who's now 3 months old and holding her own with big sibs Gracie, 12, Joel, 10, and Gus, 4.

Please join us in congratulating our colleagues!  And keep those adorable baby pictures coming, Matt and Mina!
