Hello from Heartsparks! We hope you made it through the winter and are ready for a rejuvenating and music-filled spring. We have some news and exciting stories to share.
SATURDAY SOCIAL GROUPS
We will be offering inclusive group music sessions on Saturdays from April 30 until June 11, 2016 (6 weeks) for children and teens. These groups provide an opportunity to make music and play with peers, and are facilitated by our entire team of music therapists. Parents are welcome to participate, or take the opportunity to connect with other parents at a nearby cafe. Please email jessica@heartsparks.ca by April 18th to register. The cost is $150 for 6 sessions. Space is limited (maximum of 4 per group), sorry, no drop-ins. Our studio is accessible for child-sized wheelchairs up to 25 inches width.

Please note our group times:
11:15 am - 12 pm: Ages 7-10
12:30 pm - 1:15 pm: Ages 3-6
1:45pm - 2:30 pm: Ages 11-16
A NOTE FROM ANNA
After many years of having Heartsparks as "my baby", my partner Tyler and I are excited to be expecting a baby girl in the coming weeks. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and to my outstanding team of music therapists for stepping in on extra duties throughout the past nine months. I am pleased to announce that Kate Morin will be taking on the role of administrative leader while I am away from April-July. Please contact Kate at info@heartsparks.ca and 902-209-5502 if you have any questions or concerns over the next few months.
TEAM NEWS
We are pleased to welcome Brandon Mooney to our team. Brandon holds a Bachelor of Music Therapy (2013) from Acadia University. He is a well-rounded musician who specializes in guitar music and multi-instrument improvisation. Brandon completed his music therapy internship under the supervision of three private practice music therapists in the Ottawa region. He has gained experience working with a wide variety of populations ranging from youth at risk, autism, cerebral palsy, long-term care, acquired brain injury, adult psychiatric care, and children and adults with various developmental delays. His approach to music therapy includes a combination of client-centred and community music therapy techniques where he supports each client’s unique potential with music and positivity in order to achieve established goals. Brandon also enjoys playing and performing many different styles of guitar and teaching music to students of all ages.
HIGHLIGHTING OUR INTERNS
We have been fortunate to have Laurenn Marchand and Alison Smiley completing their music therapy internship placements with us since September.

Laurenn’s songwriting and improvisational skills have added so much to our sessions. From youthful lyric writing to singing old classics with her clients, Laurenn enjoyed every part of her internship. We are happy to share that Laurenn will be joining the Heartsparks team after her internship. She will be starting a part-time position at White Hills Long Term Care Centre and will continue working with private clients in the community.

Alison’s adaptability in working with a variety of client populations shone through during her internship. Alison was also inspired to write several children’s songs. She recently recorded her “Cloud Song” and “Calm Stretching Song’”, which we hope will be the next children's song hits! Alison has accepted a job at Metro Music Therapy Inc. in Denver, Colorado. We wish her the best of luck as she completes her Master of Music Therapy degree and starts her new job position.

A warm Heartsparks THANK YOU to you both for all your hard work and creative contributions! We wish you all the best as you enter the music therapy profession.
A HOLIDAY THANK YOU
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Holiday Gathering. It was a great afternoon filled with warmth, fun and musical cheer!
