The Metaphysical Meaning of the Crucifixion and Resurrection
Unity interprets the Bible metaphysically which means we look at the deeper meaning in the stories, events, and parables to see how they apply to our own spiritual growth. We place special emphasis on the life and teachings of Jesus the Christ because he is the most spiritually evolved human being ever to grace our planet. He was and continues to be a wonderful example of how you and I can advance spiritually in this lifetime.
So...let's take a look at the Crucifixion and what it means for us in our life today. We have many crucifixions and resurrections throughout our lifetime as we grow spiritually. We crucify ourselves through negative thinking, negative attitudes, lack of self love, lack forgiveness and by allowing our ego to dominate us.
The symbol of the cross in Unity means crossing out negative thinking. Jesus, knowing his destiny of dying on a cross, embraced that destiny. He did have moments of fear and hesitation but he still said "Yes" to being all that he was meant to be.
Jesus said "yes" to his destiny and followed God's will in being all that he was meant to be. Are we living as all that we are meant to be? Are we consumed by our EGO (Easing God Out) or are we living and responding to life from our Christhood, our royal and sacred inheritance?
Jesus died to his ego and the trappings of the material world.
The tomb where Jesus was laid to rest represents an elevated, peaceful state of consciousness in which He rested the three days previous to His resurrection. Often for us, in our personal spiritual growth we too rest from the stress of the world, to gather our thoughts and feelings, to center ourselves in prayer and meditation.
The three days that Jesus was in the tomb represent the three movements of mind that are involved in overcoming negativity. First, nonresistance and humility. Remember what we resists persists. Second, the taking on of divine activity or receiving the will of God, and third, the assimilation and fulfillment of Divine will.
It is the same for us on the pathway of spiritual growth. As we grow spiritually we become ready to release negative thinking, behaviors and beliefs and are more willing to express our Christ hood. And then we are resurrected as a new person, more radiant then before, more peaceful then before and able to be a greater expression of love, of beauty, of forgiveness, of understanding, of joy.
This is what we celebrate every Easter. The releasing, the death of the blocks within us that keep us from being a new creation and resurrecting into a new level of consciousness ready to live as the radiating centers of Divine love that we are.
