Before letters and words; marks & squiggles have plenty of meaning!

Pre-writing: praise & play before pencils

At Treehouse we place great importance on pre-writing skills... giving your child a wealth of experiences to inspire them to write, as well as play opportunities which will strengthen those all important muscles in the shoulders, arms, wrists and hands, so when the time comes they are ready to manipulate a pencil into making the marks they want to.

Early writing or 'mark making' as it is often referred to in Early Years is heavily reliant on adults lavishing praise and enjoying this stage alongside the child. Remember, whatever mark they make, even if it is back-to-front, upside-down or just squiggles to you, means specifically what they intended it to.

Below is a link to download a leaflet by Penny Tassoni, entitled "Making their Mark – Children's Early Writing". It is packed full of information about the early writing stage and aims to help parents and other caring adults understand development and play an active part in their learning. We hope you find it useful!
