We have been busy! In the last few weeks we have sent:
- a welcome package to Minister Philpott which included this letter and a copy of our position papers on pricing and the need for a national strategy.
- a letter to Dr. Gregory Taylor, Chief Public Health Officer at PHAC to follow up on the promise of updated screening guidelines this spring, after learning that they will be delayed yet again.
- a letter to the new Standing Committee on Health, recommending the study of a need for a national strategy to address HCV.
- a letter to the Canadian General Managers at AbbVie, Merck, and Gilead, asking them about their choice to price HCV medicines so high.
- we also submitted feedback to CADTH regarding their request for feedback on treatment eligibility guidelines for 4 major HCV medicines.
We will keep you informed of responses as they come in. To date, we have had a response from Gilead, requesting a meeting.

Member Briefing and Q&A: National Strategy

We are starting a series to discuss each of our position papers. We purposefully keep our position papers tight and concise, so we know there is room for expanding on how we came to those positions, and digging deeper on some of the components.
We invite you to this first briefing and Q&A session which will be on the National Strategy position, which was released earlier this month. We'll also go through the National Strategy Advocacy Toolkit, designed to help our member groups speak with a consistent message on this subject in your own advocacy work.

5th Canadian Symposium on HCV
We're not done yet - remaining challenges in HCV.

Several AHC members attended the 5th Canadian Symposium on HCV in Montreal at the end of last month, and could be seen sporting their new AHC pins. We had the opportunity to display a poster, which was essentially a visual representation of our pricing position statement. Postcard versions of this poster were distributed as well.

Request from the Canadian Hemophilia Society:
Sign-on statement objecting to the Liberal Gov't request that the 86-90 surplus be allocated to "Canada"
In direct contradiction to the promise made by the Liberal Party of Canada during the 2015 election campaign not to attempt to recover the quarter-billion dollar surplus in the Trust Fund for the 1986-1990 Hepatitis C Settlement Agreement, the Attorney General of Canada has requested that the entire surplus be allocated to “Canada.” It also opposes the Joint Committee’s recommendation to allow applications from those infected who, for one reason or another, missed the June 30, 2010 deadline.
The Canadian Hemophilia Society has been in touch with the offices of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health over the last weeks in an attempt to have the Minister instruct the Attorney General to take a less rigid position with the courts regarding allocation of the surplus. The Minister’s office has indicated an unwillingness to reconsider.
We need to collectively speak up to make sure the surplus will be used to enhance benefits to class members according to the spirit of the original settlement and that those infected who missed the first claim deadline also be supported by the Government of Canada: please have your organization sign the statement reproduced below by March 23 (N.B.: At this time, we are only seeking endorsements from organizations, not individuals).

From the website: After two very successful editions of the International Hepatitis Cure & Eradication Meeting, we feel that the time has come to organize a separate International HBV Cure Workshop in 2016.
The format of this workshop will be a one-day translational meeting with invited lectures, oral abstract presentations and poster viewing sessions. In order to ascertain an interactive workshop setting, much time will be allocated to Q&A sessions, roundtable discussions and debates.
