Celebrating .NG!
 At the just concluded Africa DNS Forum and ICANN 55 meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco, NiRA had the opportunity of hosting the Nigerian community and sowed the positive seed, which we are hopeful would germinate and eventually engender appropriate Nigerian government participation in subsequent ICANN meetings. We are also looking forward to collaboration with ZACR, ZA Central Registry (South Africa) and KENIC, the Kenya Network Information Centre. All these would result in increase in the registration of the .ng domain names. The NiRA Executive Board of Directors, led by my humble self, hosted the Nigerian delegates at ICANN 55, with the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Communications, Arch. Sunday Echono, Mr. Shola Taylor, Secretary-General, Commonwealth Telecommunication Organization (CTO) and numerous other dignitaries in attendance. We indicated willingness to volunteer our services to the Federal Government of Nigeria in its representation at the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) at ICANN. NiRA clearly demonstrated its leadership role and was the rallying point for other African countries at ICANN 55.
On the 12th March 2016, we had the maiden edition of the .ng Fair and Exhibition, which was declared open by our amiable Chairman, NiRA Board of Trustees, Deacon Chima Onyekwere, OON. It was a fantastic occasion. We had diverse groups of exhibitors and participants; NiRA stakeholders, from amongst NiRA Accredited Registrars, Galaxy Backbone Plc, Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), Insurance companies, New Horizon, the youth, students, etc were in attendance. All sectors of the DNS industry were represented. Free offering on that day was free .name.ng domain name registration by NiRA Accredited Registrars for participants at the exhibition. This gesture was patronized and well appreciated.

Domain Names…the journey so far.
 A domain name is that unique identifier assigned to a particular entity within the Internet or cyberspace.
Imagine the Internet without domain names! When you need to check your email, update your social media status or perform any routine activity on the web, instead of typing on your browser the web address of the website, you type a bunch of numbers, such as 74.125.224.181 or 69.171.234.21 otherwise known as IP addresses. Imagine having to do this every time you go online. It’s like dialing a phone number for each and every website you visit! You can imagine the quantum of mistakes many people would make. Luckily, we don’t need to remember or memorize these lists of numbers. This is all as a result of the Domain Name System (DNS), a system for naming computers and network services that is organized into a hierarchy of domains.
When the Domain Name System was devised in the 1980s, the domain name space was divided into two main groups of domains. The country code top-level domains (ccTLD) were primarily based on the two-character territory codes of ISO-3166 country abbreviations (like the .ng, .ke, .za etc). In addition, a group of seven generic top-level domains (gTLD) was implemented which represented a set of categories of names and multi-organizations. These were the domains gov, edu, com, mil, org, net, and int.

AFRINIC Call for Fellowships is Open
 AFRINIC is offering fellowships for the AFRINIC-24 meeting to be held in Gaborone, Botswana, from 4th to 10th June 2016. The fellowship is reserved for individuals representing small organisations, universities, and media who are actively involved in Internet operations and development or ICT policies in their countries. The fellow is expected to positively and actively contribute to IP address management awareness in the AFRINIC service region.
The close date for the application is 2nd April 2016. The Final announcement and publication of the fellowship list would be by 2nd May 2016.

Milestone Reached
 ICANN Board Chair, Dr. Stephen D. Crocker has submitted to the U.S. Government a plan developed by the international Internet community, which, if approved, will lead to global stewardship of some key technical Internet functions. ICANN Board has also transmitted the IANA Stewardship Transition Proposal and Enhancing ICANN Accountability Recommendations to NTIA
The current IANA Stewardship Transition proposal development process represents the final phase of a plan to privatize the coordination and management of the DNS, initially outlined in a 1998 Department of Commerce White Paper. The U.S. Government recognized that, as the commercial use of the Internet expanded globally, governance of the Internet would also need to expand, evolve and adapt. The U.S. Government also believed that a private sector led organization would be better suited to lead and adapt to the rapid pace of innovation on the Internet.
