March, 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

I’m a sucker for stories about dogs, and so it was no surprise that I was glued to the radio when WBUR featured a story about a Golden Retriever named Murphy.  It began when Murphy’s owner ran her car into a tree (without injury, thankfully).  When she opened the back door to check on Murphy, however, he bolted from the car and ran like a greyhound in the race of his life, never looking back.  Dogs, apparently, are not immune to the “fight or flight” reflex that puts them into survival mode during a crisis.  It took the work of an amazing community to cajole Murphy back home.  A year later, he was back with his owner, no worse for the wear.  Cue “Happy Days” music.

The story reminded me of how inherent the “acute stress” response is for all of us when our backs are against the wall.  Unrealistic deadlines, pressure to perform, a never say no culture - all push even the most disciplined and capable leader to the brink.  While many leaders entered the year with a confident stride, a couple of months into 2016 and reality has sucked that optimism dry.

While not as dramatic as vamoosing out the door like Murphy, some leaders sideline their goals when challenges overwhelm or job requirements push them outside their comfort zone.  The net effect is that well-intentioned goals are pushed to the side, “just for now.”

If you’re feeling the urge to abandon your goals, today’s featured article may help you get back on course and re-ignite those goals so eagerly developed at the end of 2015.

For all the talk (and writing) about goal setting, the reality is that the first few months of the year are often filled with cleaning up after December. Then, of course, there are the usual Q1 distractions, like sales conferences, performance reviews, quotas and marketing launches. The best-made plans already feel at risk and it’s easy to understand how our goals and resolutions get thrown to the wind.

It’s right about now that you may give in to the fear that this year won’t, in fact, be different. You respond by continuing to run full speed ahead - toward what, you’re not sure.  Like a dog dashing out the door at warp speed, activity feels good as the adrenaline continues to fuel the pace.  And, then, suddenly, you look up and realize you’re a long way from home.

Perhaps you fear that slowing the pace will somehow diminish your ability to succeed. Yet, ironically, slowing the pace is what allows us to see the road ahead more clearly – or to recognize when we’ve strayed from home - enabling us to get back on course, or change direction completely.

If you’ve found yourself running amok already this year, fear not.  Here are some tried and true techniques for getting and keeping your goals front and center for the next nine months.

“I worked with Jacqueline as a part of a Camden Consulting leadership development program designed specifically for NaviNet. The program combined a personality assessment, leadership training and coaching over six months. Jacqueline helped me identify my leadership development priorities and to create a plan for achieving those goals. As a result, I am more clear about what I want to accomplish developmentally and how to move the ball forward.”
