Welcome to the SpringE

From the Headmistress

Dear Parents

I has certainly been a busy week with a multitude of things happening! We celebrated Science Week with a range of challenges  involving two year groups. Great fun was had by all and the children displayed some very good scientific skills of enquiry, review and cooperation.

As a finale, we tested the home made spinners in assembly this morning, Jessica Padget-Howard was a worthy winner!

On Tuesday we participated in the annual choral concert with RGSW and RGS The Grange singing as individual schools and then coming together as a whole choir.  As ever I am amazed by the musical talent displayed by the children, it is a wonderful opportunity for them all to sing in the Cathedral.

As you know children had their English Speaking Board exams last Friday, the results have arrived and are very encouraging this year, particularly as many children do worry about them more than they need to. Well done to everyone who overcame their nerves and presented with aplomb.

Dragonflies have been busy practising for our Easter Service next Thursday afternoon, you are welcome to join us if you are able. Children may go home with you immediately after the service or at 3.30pm.

Next week also brings the hotly contested House Easter Egg Hunt, Rush Hour Concert, House Netball, final trips and a fun swim.

Any staffing news and general updates will be sent out in the end of term letter next week.

I am looking forward to the RGS Superball on Saturday and hope to see many of you there.

Have a great weekend,
Laura Brown

Super Science
Year Five have had an exciting science week. On Monday they visited the Senior School with the Grange to take part in the annual Eggstravaganza. The children worked in teams of four to create the longest span bridge possible whilst ensuring it could support a 50 gram egg and allow a 30cm pirate ship to pass underneath all from straws and plasticine. The children worked extremely hard and created some impressive structures.

In addition, to working with eggs the children have tested air resistance by making spinners and calculating the one that fell the slowest. To make it a fair test they carried out two drops and took the slowest.

Year Two and Three really enjoyed working collaboratively during Science Week. Following in the footsteps of Tim Peake we designed and made our very own space rockets to race against each other. We reflected on the shape and design of our quickest rockets and how gravity helped them fall back to Earth. We hope Tim returns without a bump.

For Science Week, Dragonflies and Year One teamed up for some super space activities. We designed and made a new astronaut costume for Tim Peake, using a range of materials. We also had lots of wow moments when we made some fizzy rockets. We placed a fizzy tablet inside a film canister, added a small amount of water, put the lid on and watched the canisters fly up into the air. The children loved this activity and learnt a new term - carbon dioxide gas.  We visited a mobile planetarium at the senior school on Thursday and Year One have also been making famous star constellations out of marshmallows and cocktail sticks.

Successful Singing
On Tuesday,  the Springfield Choir took part in a whole school  RGS concert at Worcester Cathedral.  Over the last four weeks, the children had been rehearsing and preparing to sing two songs alone and two with the Grange and Senior School Choirs. The Springfield songs were Canoe Song which was based on a Native American Folk Song and Riversong composed by the contemporary composer and arranger Andy Beck. In the second half of the concert the Year Five and Six joined the mass choir to sing John Rutter's Gloria and Flower Remembered.

For all involved it was a magical experience to perform in such a prestigious venue. Well done to all those who took part.

Load of Rubbish
Year Five have been finding out about landfill and recycling. First they chose a material and researched the recycling process. They have used this information to create a presentation using PuppetPals app. The children have used a wide range of skills and have all tackled the activity differently. Some have used the computer to watch flash animations of recycling and handwritten a script before creating a talk show style animation on the iPad. Others have chosen to use a green screen app to demonstrate their learning. The finished presentations are then uploaded to a Load of Rubbish ebook.

Happily Ever After
On Wednesday, the Dragonflies visited Aston Hall where we experienced the enchanting tale of Cinderella. All of the children were able to dress up as characters, from the Wicked Stepmother to the Handsome Prince. The magnificent 17th Century red brick building became the home of Cinderella and all of the children were able to lend a hand and help Cinders with her daily chores. We washed the clothes using a dolly tub and washboard, swept the floors with a broomstick and beat rugs with a carpet beater. The magical Fairy Godmother appeared and we were able to help search for mice, lizards and a pumpkin, as the magic continued we were all invited to attend Prince Charming’s ball in the Long Gallery. We all learnt a 17th Century dance before the clock struck twelve and Cinderella fled leaving behind her glass slipper. Thankfully Cinders was reunited with the handsome prince and all lived happily ever after.

Brownies
Tonight the Brownies completed their First Aid badge. They learnt how to bandage wounds and make a sling. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Hildred for coming in to teach the Brownies about first aid and what to do in an emergency.

Sport
Netball
Two mixed Year Five and Six teams visited Winterfold School on Wednesday to play netball in the sunshine. The Under 11A Team played Winterfold's B Team and were losing after the first quarter. Springfield then fought back and managed to draw the score at half time. After a closely contested second half, Springfield finished worthy winners with a 9-7 score line. The Under 11B team were defeated in their match but worked hard as a team to defend and regain possession.

On Thursday, Springfield competed in the Primary Schools' Netball Tournament at RGSW. There were a total of eleven schools taking part.  Springfield made a great start winning their first three games. They went on to draw with St George's  RC and win their last group game to qualify for the semi final. Springfield narrowly beat Pitmaston 1-0 to secure their place in the final. After a very determined effort and exciting match, The Grange finished as winners with the final score of 4-2. Congratulations to the team for finishing runners up in what was a very fast paced tournament. A special mention must be given to Samantha Ralph who scored a total of 25 goals in seven games.

Football
Our boys played against The Downs School yesterday. They defended very well for long periods and scored an excellent goal.

Relay
RGS Springfield entered the recent RGS X-Country Spring relays. Each pupil in the team ran a deceptively long leg and then passed over to the next member. All our pupils performed very well amongst some very strong runners. Well done.
The following boys and girls took part:
Girls
Sam Ralph
Alexa Pinches
Lily Waites

Boys
Harry Waites
Harry Rutter
Kristian McCabe
