San Diego Chapter 118
Chapter Leadership

President: Dick Jeffreys
Vice President - Gene Alfaro
Secretary – Open
Treasurer Jack Porath.
Contact us

We are Searching for a New Chapter Secretary.

The Secretary is one of the 4 elected Chapter officers.  Our current Secretary, Franceen Kakavoulis-Perera has resigned.  She will continue in the position until we find a new volunteer, if we don’t take too long.  Franceen has filled this position several times over the years, and we thank her for her service and expect to see her at future meetings.

The Secretary attends the 6 Executive Committee meetings (which alternate with the Membership meetings), takes notes, and prepares minutes.  These activities should take about 4 hours.

The Secretary also attends the 6 Membership meetings and prepares a short summary, and these activities should take about 3.5 hours.

If you are interested in helping Chapter 118 by volunteering to be our Secretary, please contact Chapter President, Dick Jeffreys, at rjeffreys2@san.rr.com.

CyberPatriot VIII Competition Results.

All of the competitions have concluded, with the exception of the National Finals scheduled for Baltimore, MD in early April.

Of the 28 teams that have been invited to the National Finals, we are honored to have 3 teams from San Diego County. The teams are the Patrick Henry H.S. NJROTC Blue team, Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) Fort Fisher Division Varsity team, and Oak Valley M.S. CyberFalcon Millennium 360 team.

We wish these teams the best of luck and hope they bring home 1 or 2 championships.  Other teams from San Diego which won awards are: a second NSCC Fort Fisher Division team, Ramona H.S. NJROTC team, Del Norte H.S. team, and a second Oak Valley M.S. team.

We are proud of all of the teams from San Diego County that participated in the competition.  We will present AFA and Chapter 118 Certificates to these teams as soon as they are available.

CHAPTER HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER OF THE YEAR RECOGNIZED

The Chapter 118 high school Teacher of the Year received her Area 3 plaque at the general meeting of the San Diego Chapter on February 29, 2016.

The award was presented to Ms. Carrie Northrum by the chapter president Dick Jeffreys.  Ms. Northrum is also the robotics club teacher.  Her  robotics program is growing and flourishing.  The team had won many awards, including both Tournament Champions and the prestigious Excellence Award.

Two of her three teams have qualified for both the State Championships in Pasadena as well as the CREATE US Open Championships in Council Bluffs, IA this spring.

Ms. Northrum's school and district do not offer any financial support, and the estimated cost of the trip to Nationals to be about $8000.

The San Diego Chapter 118 is proud to assist Ms. Northrum and her robotics team.  President Dick Jeffreys presented her a check for $500 toward the goal of getting the team to the nationals.

Good Luck!

Major Derek Abbey (USMC, Retired), February 29th Membership Meeting Speaker.

We were honored to have Major Derek Abbey as the speaker at our last meeting.  Major Abbey is a 23 year veteran of the Marine Corps having served as both an enlisted communications specialist and an officer as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer, Plank Owner in the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, and Director of the Marine Corps’ Train the Trainer School.

Since his retirement, he has held Military Liaison Officer and Veteran Coordinator positions at San Diego State University and University of San Diego.  His very interesting presentation was on the BentProp Project.  The BentProp Project focuses on research,  investigation, and recovery of remains of U.S service members missing in action (MIA) in the South Pacific; specifically, the Island Nation of Palau.  Highly specialized team members have been visiting Palau for over 2 decades.  In the last 2 years, the team has located 3 American aircraft and 7 MIAs.

George Haloulakos, March 31st Membership Meeting Speaker.

George Haloulakos is a Chartered Financial Advisor, university instructor, author, and entrepreneur.  His published works utilize aviation as a teaching tool for his Finance, Game Theory, History, and Strategy courses.

His interactive presentation to us will be about his most recent book, Call to Glory.  Call to Glory is the story of the Convair B-58 Hustler.  According to George, “During the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, the Convair B-58 Hustler proved to be a difference maker, but by the end of the decade was retired.

"This tribute and historic reappraisal of this iconic USAF supersonic nuclear strike bomber is based on first-hand accounts from those who flew this record-setting aircraft for SAC during the Cold War.”

New Community Partner

At our general membership meeting on February 29, 2016 at Filippi's Pizza Grotto on Kearny Villa Road, President Dick Jeffreys welcomed our newest Community Partner to the Chapter.

Ms. Donna Moss, an Edward Jones, financial advisor, was presented a Community Partner plaque.  Donna believes it’s important to invest her time to understand what her clients are working toward before investing their money.  Ms. Moss is able to assist chapter members from the youngest to the oldest in reviewing their financial planning needs.

We welcome Donna Moss to our list of Community Partners and recommend our members check out her website.
