1. PJC Public Speaking Workshop
Youth facilitators Ana and Jose led a public speaking workshop on March 6 th in Kinston, NC. PJC youth participated in a Commercial Speech activity, a 60 Seconds of Fame activity and a mini- YouthSpeak mock. Through this workshop youth veteran PJC members polished their public speaking skills, and new additions discovered skills they were unaware of! Our special guest, Cameron Bargerstock joined us to talk about a Teen Vogue project centered on diverse youth leaders. Numerous PJC youth demonstrated interest in participating in the project.

2. UNC-Wilmington Trip
On Feb. 26th PJC took a trip to Wilmington as the first college campus trip of the year! Throughout the day youth received an admission informative session, a tour of the campus, preview of the dorms, visit to the bookstore, and experienced eating lunch with current college students at the campus dining hall! The educational excursion for the day was a trip to the USS Battleship. Youth went on a self-guided tour and searched for the wishing well (the object to find for the day). No one was able to find it! But they were able to learn about the WWI experience. Youth were able to visit the crew’s quarters, galley, engine room, plotting rooms, the Admirals Cabin to name a few.

3. PJC at the NC Farmworker Institute
|
|
|
PJC Youth will have the opportunity to present a mini-YouthSpeak at the Farmworker Institute. YouthSpeak provides youth with the opportunity to speak about the issues, challenges, obstacles, goals, dreams, and concerns they have with the community as farmworker youth. The panel will consist of a diverse group of farmworker youth in eastern North Carolina who will raise awareness of what their life and goals are. 4. ECU Public Health Donations
Through the Farmworker Hygiene-Kit Project, ECU-Public Health received various donations of personal care products. On March 3rd I met with Greg Kearney to pick up the hundreds of toiletries! NC FIELD and PJC will create health kits to be distributed during the summer to farmworker families.

5. Kinston Health Fair
NC FIELD tabled at the Latino Community Kinston Health Fair at the Lenoir Co. Co-Operative Extension in Kinston on Saturday, March 19th. NC FIELD provided the community with outreach materials about pesticide exposure and protection, youth labor laws, and healthy lifestyle booklets. The community also received an overview of the programs and services that NC FIELD offers.

6. Latino Leadership Conference
On February 27th NC FIELD participated in the Latino Leadership Conference by being on a panel to represent youth and families from Kinston, Lenoir County. The panel addressed issues of advocacy, youth + education, and leadership among Latinos in eastern North Carolina.

7. National Farmworker Awareness Week
National Farmworker Awareness Week (NFAW) is a week of action for students and community members to raise awareness about farmworker issues on our campuses and in our communities. Want to learn more?
For this project NC FIELD will focus on the success, dreams, and goals of farmworkers. This project is broken down into two sections, highlighting current farmworker youth from our Poder Juvenil Campesino (PJC) youth council and former farmworker youth nationwide. Stories will be posted on our blog page daily. So be sure to bookmark and visit us daily!
The purpose of this project is to show the community that someone who works in the fields, farms, packing houses, picking and processing the food we eat everyday is so much more than just a farmworker. These are people who despite of the challenges and their current situation have dreams and goals.

Donate!!!
NC FIELD does most of its work on a small budget and with support of volunteers. There are a lot of operating costs in serving farmworkers. Through your donation PJC youth will learn about colleges/universities, DACA, social justice, youth organizing, and more! If you would like to donate to help families in crisis with utility bills and food shortages please donate to our Emergency Farmworker Fund and Food bank.
