Happy Holidays Everyone!
Yep, it's that time of year if you haven't noticed. Here in Winnemucca, we've had snow, cold and lots of little twinkly lights going up on houses around town. For Nevada Outdoor School, early December means we've had a chance to reflect on our fiscal year, which ended in September 30th and our annual report is out! If you want to know a bit more of what we have been up to for the past year, I recommend checking it out here:

NOS Annual Report 2010

We will also be taking a little bit of a break from the office for the last two weeks of December. This will give our staff and national service members a chance to rest and spend time with thier families, for when our programs get rolling in the new year, we will continue to be a very busy group.

Be safe and joyous today and throughout the season and most of all, have fun out there!

Rockin Rocks - Kindergarten Lesson

Education

Two new naturalists have joined Nevada Outdoor School's education team this month. We are very happy to welcome Nikky Lynch and Shelby Hollmaier, both of Winnemucca, to the NOS family. With a fully staffed education team we are excited to reach more classrooms with our inquirty-based science lessons starting with this month's Rocks and Minerals themed curriculum. Students will be growing crystals, venturing on rock hunts, and minining "gold" out of choclate chip cookies. Rest assured, no matter the lesson - it will be a rockin' good time!

AmeriCorps

This month we welcomed two new AmeriCorps state members. There is now another tutor serving in the Lander County School District, Jameline Lofing. Last year, she served in the same location but as a VISTA, which is another arm of the AmeriCorps national program. In Nevada Outdoor School office's we welcomed Shelby Hollmaier.

The AmeriCorps team is gearing up for a national day of service on January 17, 2011- Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This will be an opportunity for all of the members from all over northern Nevada to come into Winnemucca and serve at some of the local non-profits here. Marting Luther King Jr. Day is supposed to be a "day On, not OFF" meaning that for the past 25 years people have been giving back to their communities on that day in honor of Reverend King's dedication to service. If anyone is interested in particpating in a national day of service event, please contact me at the office and I will be happy to help you find an opportunity.

Outdoor Ethics

Dust off your snowshoes and come learn about Leave No Trace (LNT) and teaching techniques while exploring a winter wonderland. Nevada Outdoor School is hosting an LNT Trainer course Friday, January 28th through Sunday, the 30th in the Donner Summit area.

We will explore the various principles of LNT while enjoying snowshoe hikes along trails in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Each participant will give a short presentation on an assigned principle; this is a great way to practice your teaching techniques and get ideas from fellow LNTers. At night we will warm up indoors at Clair Tappaan, a rustic mountain lodge nestled in the Sierras near Donner Pass.

Visit
www.nevadaoutdoorschool.org for more information and to register. Plus, visit the new outdoor ethics blog for more enticing photos of the area and hikes www.outdoorethicsnos.blogspot.com. Sign up now - this course is limited to eight participants.
