Taanishi, IPAA members and allies:
Our quarterly newsletter is now monthly to provide you with consistent coverage of what is happening in Indigenous performance across Turtle Island.
IPAA signed a letter in solidarity with NIMAC regarding an offensive film that was programmed in the Rendezvous du cinéma québecois. Click here to view the letter.
The interim Executive Director of the ACC Clayton Windatt was able to invite me to a meeting with the Honourable Mélanie Joly Minister of Canadian Heritage last week.
(He was also able to get a polaroid selfie with her!)
Each organization had two minutes to address her directly and I spoke of the systemic barriers for Indigenous artists at the Department of Canadian Heritage. Click here to view the page I provided the Minister.
I would also like to remind you of the report IPAA Network Coordinator Brittany Ryan prepared called Freedom To Engage. It lays the foundation for a role IPAA can play in gathering community feedback about an Indigenist Performance Agreement as an alternative to the colonial structures governing "professional" practice.
Please keep us informed of the issues you face in the performing arts.
Our capacity is building and so is our ability to claim space for all Indigenous performing artists.
In solidarity,
Cole Alvis, Executive Director
