Locum rides for Camp Quality

It’s no secret many of the RDWA locums like cycling. Part-time locum Dr Russell Richardson is taking his cycling adventures to the next level and riding in Camp Quality’s 1,000K’s 4 Kids Ultimate - South Australia.

On 6 May 2016, Russell and his team will venture out of their comfort zones, riding a staggering 1000 kilometres in ten days along the Great Ocean Road. The ride kicks off in Geelong and after visiting several Victorian towns will cruise through Mount Gambier, Beachport, Kingston, Meningie and Milang before pedalling to the finish line in Glenelg on 15 May 2016. The teams will make regular stops along the way to raise awareness about the wonderful support Camp Quality provides to children affected by cancer and their families.

The RDWA is proudly sponsoring Russell and his team - The RDWA Pink Team. The team includes Jessye a 14 year old who lost her vision to a rare form of cancer and her Mum. Jessye and her Mum have benefited from being a part of the Camp Quality family growing up and are riding to contribute to a community that has supported them so well.

Alongside their intensive training regime, the RDWA Pink Team has been undertaking pretty intensive fundraising activity. The money raised will help Camp Quality achieve its goal of creating a better life for kids living with cancer.

Overall the riders participating in Camp Quality’s 1,000K’s 4 Kids hope to raise $100,000 and they are half-way to this target. Russell and his fellow RDWA Pink Team members are giving up the comforts of home and putting their lives on hold to help kids in real need of a boost. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductable and can be made to Russell’s or Jessye’s fundraising page.

REGISTRATIONS OPEN - RDWA Annual Conference
100% OF OUR FUTURE - Managing children's health in country
Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May 2016

The Annual RDWA Conference this year is focussed on managing today to fulfil our hopes for tomorrow.

Our country kids make up 30% of our population but will be 100% of our future. This year’s conference is all about the health of country kids.

The program we have put together covers many of the topics that you as rural GPs face on a daily basis. There are sessions on trauma management, pain management, immunisation, asthma, diabetes management, allergies, child trauma, behavioural development, ENT, burns management and otitis media.

It is well understood that the scope of practice required for rural GPs goes beyond what is required by your metro counterparts. To ensure that you have access to the latest information and clinical knowledge we have sourced the best in their fields to present sessions at this year’s conference. This also reinforces the connections to the specialists in each of the areas that support services that you manage locally.

We will also be running a half day pre-conference workshop for our doctors who are on their pathway to Fellowship focussing on musculoskeletal management.

We have a concurrent Family Program with activities for children of all ages and for parents and partners.

Our student program has become a regular feature and there will be a full day of activities for up to 100 University students from the three rural clubs. As part of the student program this year RDWA is pleased to provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to be involved in the Helping Hands project to build prosthetic hands.

It’s also a special year as we celebrate with the doctors who have given 25 years of service to rural communities. This year we will also be recognising the doctors who have given 35 years or more service. This black tie event will be held on the Saturday night of the Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

We look forward to seeing you in May.

Register now for the RDWA Annual Conference.
