Dear Members,
What an exciting month it has been, with Oscars coming thick and fast for Australian Feature Mad Max Fury Road, with Margaret Sixel taking home the editing award from the BAFTA’s, ACE, Oscars and even our own Film Critics Circle of Australia award.

It is a good reason to celebrate, so it was exciting to be able to join forces with the APDG and ASSG and Kennedy Miller to party with the Oscar winners. Of course film-making is all about collaboration, so we also congratulate the post production team, which includes ASE members: editor Mark Perry and past president Jason Ballantine ASE, with Matt Town and Nicole Thorn, Kelly Cameron, Cindy Rodriguez and Jack Swart, ASE lifetime member.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors for your support which has enabled us to be involved in this celebration, in particular Avid, Audio Network and AFTRS.

You may be aware that at the end of last month some of our other editors were up against Fury Road in the Film Critics Circle Award for editing. Which sadly meant the fine editing of ASE members Dany Cooper ASE and Tania Nehme, along with Andy Canny and Jill Bilcock ASE was left a little bit in the dust..

It seems extraordinary, but planning is already underway for this year’s ASE awards night, with our inveterate party people Jane St Vincent Welch ASE, and Andrea Lang ASE forging ahead with Margaret Slarke and Sophia Habib to ensure we have what promises to be a very glamorous affair.

It is great to see the events that have been held and are coming up in Queensland and Victoria, which are covering technical and creative issues for editors, assistants and visual effects artists. You can read about these further in the Newsletter, and stay tuned for events which are currently being planned for WA and NSW.

And a reminder that the Executive committee has put the draft rate card on the ASE website for our full members to review and comment. We have received a lot of feedback, it is great to see so much interest. The draft will be open for your feedback until 30th March, your comments will remain anonymous, so if you haven’t yet, please have a look and give us your thoughts.

We would love to have a broad range of comments from the various departments - HOD’s and assistants, on both the terms and conditions, as well as the actual rates.  The more help you can give us in understanding your concerns and expectations, the better this reference tool will be.

You will find it in ‘wages and conditions’ under the Resources tab, and can email your thoughts to office@screeneditors.com.au

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, a video has now been added to the tribute page for Suresh Ayyar, so take a moment to have a look and reflect on Suresh’s fine body of work.

Many thanks to Frans Vandenburg ASE and Dany Cooper ASE for instigating and following through the collation and production of this short film. A host of filmmakers and colleagues contributed stills and clips, with help from Debbie Sander at the AFTRS Library. All this material was sensitively edited by ASE members Alison Myers and Scott Dyer.

And finally, don’t forget to send in pictures and stories from the cutting room, you could win one of  our classic Australian DVD’s to add to your film library.

State Updates

QUEENSLAND

On Thursday 17 March, ASE Queensland arranged our first PostInsiders of the year. Over 30 people were treated to a fantastic evening at BREEDER, one of Australia’s leading motion design studios.

Motion editor Alex Gee and Technical Lead Chris “Moe” Morris gave our members great insights into how their small and dynamic team design, produce and edit acclaimed work such as the opening credits for HBO’s drama series TRUE DETECTIVE (season 1) and Syfy’s THE EXPANSE. It was fascinating to learn how a local and very passionate team of artists is able to attract and generate work of such consistently high quality.

A big thanks goes out to BREEDER producer Candace Marshall, who helped organise the event and so generously provided our members with free beer and pizza. Much appreciated guys!

Up Next:

The ASE and Cutting Edge is proud to present THE FUTURE OF EDITING, a special panel disussion with top Queensland editors at the upcoming Gold Coast Film Festival.

We’ll look at the craft of editing, emerging trends and industry changes.  This event is a must for emerging talent, filmmakers and film lovers alike.

WHEN: 4.30pm-5.30pm, Friday 1 April
WHERE: Lounge Room, Arts Centre Gold Coast

Book your free ticket here.

Until next time,

Axel Grigor ASE
Qld Chair

Celebrating MAD MAX - FURY ROAD Bafta and Oscar wins

George Miller, Fiona Strain ASE, Margaret Sixel and post team: Matt Town, Mark Perry, Jasper Susi, Justin Tran, Elliot Knapman, Mandy Eyley and Andrew Corsi

On Saturday at the AACTA bar, Event Cinemas Bondi Junction, the ASE joined with the ASSG & the APDG to celebrate the hard work and excellent achievement by our peers on Mad Max: Fury Road; all academy award winners were present including Director George Miller.

Australia earned a record number of Oscar and BAFTA wins and nominations - culminating in awards to: Colin Gibson a.p.d.g - production design, Lisa Thomson - set decoration, Lesley Vanderwalt - make up and hair, Elka Wardega -  senior prosthetic artist, Damian Martin - prosthetics supervisor, Margaret Sixel - editing, Ben Osmo - sound mixing and David White - sound editing.

Our President, Fiona Strain ASE, shared a funny anecdote about working with Miller, and gave a wonderful introduction for Margaret Sixel, Academy Award winner for best editing, saying “What Margaret did with Fury Road was not just bring the frenetic action to screen with very little dialogue to guide it, but make it real, make the audience gasp and duck and weave; to feel the adrenaline while understanding and enjoying the characters journey. A statement everyone in the audience agreed on.

Sara Bennett, Life Member of the ASE, rejoiced in Margaret’s success, sharing an anecdote about how she helped to give Margaret her first start in the industry. After this Margaret spoke about how she recalled that time with Sara and truly believes that it is the duty of experienced editors to guide young editors and pass down the knowledge accrued through years of editing.

The event came together incredibly quickly to take advantage of a small window when we had so many of the winners together, so we would like to thank Margaret Slarke for her herculean efforts dealing with the administration of the event, and apologize to members and sponsors who were unable to make it due to short notice. We hope to have some more photos of the afternoon as they come through.

It was truly a wonderful evening for everyone, and the ASE would like to thank Avid, Audio Network & AFTRS for contributing to the event. Thanks also to Jane St Vincent Welch ASE and Brianna Cook for their help on the day.

NSW SUNDOWNERS

The 21st of February saw the first Sundowners of the year for NSW guild members at the Wayward Brewery in Camperdown. Editors both young and old chatted about rates, how everyone got started, and the director/producer/editor relationship amongst other things. A great mix of experiences gave way to many perspectives in an informal setting surrounded by craft beer tastings, children making techincolour fans, and 'Edit Suite Dog' Eva making the rounds for some pats.

Congrats to Julien Chichignoud - winner of Fiona's production shirt challenge - for his 'I'm a Tay Man' Tee. The film - about a group of men who come out as Taylor Swift fans - was recently a finalist at Tropfest. He wins a copy of the Aussie cult classic - 'Stone' (1974)

Meet the ASE COMMUNITY

Meet The Member: Ryan Cauchi (NSW)

Ryan is an editor and filmmaker based in Sydney. In 2014, he was nominated by the ASE for ‘Best Editing in a Commercial’ for Steadfast “Brisbane Roar”. As an assistant editor his credits include “The Logan Project” (SBS), “The Embassy” (Nine) and the upcoming revival of “20 to 1” (Nine). His latest short film “It Grows!” (co-directed with Nick Stathopoulos) has screened in over twenty international film festivals, in Australia, Canada, Japan, Spain and the United States, and has won multiple awards, including ‘Best Editing’ at the Salty Horror International Film Festival. He is also a regular guest on ABC Local Radio’s “Movieland” podcast, presented by CJ Johnson.

When I start a project I fix myself a cup of coffee (long black - no sugar) and hope for the best.

When I finish a project I reach for the nearest bottle and hope for the best.

It makes my day when the director and producer(s) like my edit.

I hide under the desk when an email entitled “Client Feedback/Revisions” arrives in my inbox.

I love the editing in "Whiplash". It was a tour-de-force exercise in suspense, tension and energy. I also love the editing in Alfred Hitchcock’s films - "Rear Window", "Psycho" "The Birds", you name it!

The ASE has… supported my professional and creative development over the years, and has connected me with many other dedicated and talented editors.

WORKSPACE OF THE MONTH

Send us a picture of your workspace and win an Australian classic DVD.

Tell us what you love (or hate) about your workspace.

This month: Melanie Sandford ASE (NSW)

My current editing room is in a farm shed, somewhere in Victoria. Along with sheep on the farm, there are
several demijohns of wine brewing. I couldn’t believe the bubbling noise they made when they first kicked off the fermentation process. Not to mention the smell!

After I’d been here a few weeks I finally had to ask Claire Jager, the director I’m working with: ‘By the way where am I’? I now know I’m somewhere between Castlemaine and Kyenton, where the air is fresh and very dry. Claire’s film is about the dangers of the Turkish Strait, otherwise known as the Bosphorus. It’s full of what I call ‘Tanker Porn’. I love that it’s about big beefy macho things mainly operated by men and the film crew is all female.

Today I stopped wrestling with the sequence I was cutting to help round up some escaped sheep. Should I put that on my CV?
