Spring has finally sprung at WildFox HQ on Loch Tay and we have been basking in the sunshine for the last week. Your Quad training should now be entering a key phase as the fair weather and extended daylight hours gives you more time to get out. This month's newsletter is all about the Kayak phase….

The seven mile paddle goes from Loch Tay Highland Lodges east up the loch to the event hub at Kindrochit. On a dry and windless day this can be the most enjoyable phase of the event but  with a head, cross or tail wind, some choppy waves and a partner who you haven't paddled with much, it can be a lot tougher and longer than you anticipate. Get out on the water, improve your technique, practice together and make this phase as energy efficient as you can. Here’s some key information about the kayak phase:

  • All teams paddle 2 seater Malibu 2 sit-on-top kayaks (provided by the event). They are compact, lightweight & stable. 
  • Compulsory kit includes a waterproof jacket and trousers. NOTE: use the same set from your mountain kit.
  • Consider a change of footwear, wet feet coming off the mountains will get cold quickly on the water.
  • You must paddle up the north side of the loch and cross the loch once you've stopped off at the infamous 'Bikini Beach' for a cocktail.
  • The kayak phase should take between 1hr 15mins and 2hrs 30mins.
  • Regular kayaking is the best way to train for the kayak phase, however, if that is not possible you need to build your upper body and core muscles and endurance with exercises such as Inverted Rows, Chin Ups, Russian Twist & Plank.
  • There are cut off times in place at the end of the Kayak phase.
