Conference in honor of Professor Jorge Dominguez in Mexico
In early March, the DRCLAS Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Office, in collaboration with Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), hosted a day-long conference in Mexico City, in honor of Jorge Dominguez, Antonio Madero Professor for the Study of Mexico and former Vice Provost for International Affairs at Harvard. The event featured an array of panels, presided over by local scholars, and discussions that drew expertise from Professor Dominguez's vast experience in domestic and international politics in Latin America. The topics covered included Cuba-U.S. Relations, Mexican and Central American immigration, and the Mexican electoral system.

DRCLAS and HGSE in Cartagena
This past January in Cartagena, Colombia, Professors Steve Seidel and James Honan of the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) led a public talk on the power of arts education in creating social change. As part of the 10th Annual Cartagena Music Festival, the talk featured Paula Moreno, Colombia’s former minister of culture, and Bruce Mac Master, president of the Asociación Nacional de Empresarios de Colombia. During this visit, DRCLAS also launched Music, the winter issue of ReVista: Harvard Review of Latin America.
The talk was part of the Social Integration through the Arts (SITA) initiative's academic programming. Led by DRCLAS in collaboration with the Arts in Education Program at HGSE, this long-term initiative aims to strengthen efforts across Latin America to improve educational outcomes and enrich the quality of life in communities through engagement with the arts.

Mobility Laboratory in São Paulo
In January, the Harvard-DRCLAS Brazil Office and the Mobility Laboratory of the City of São Paulo (MobiLab) offered a new interdisciplinary and intensive ten-day January experience. In total, nine Harvard and eleven Brazilian students had the opportunity to work with the MobiLab team on high-level practical application of computer science, public policy/administration, economics, and urban planning skills. This application development experience aims to impact the urban mobility infrastructure in São Paulo.

A Public Talk by Jorge Lanata
With sponsorship from Banco Santander and in collaboration with the Nieman Foundation, and the Harvard Argentine Student Society, DRCLAS organized a public talk by Jorge Lanata, Argentine writer and journalist. During the talk, which was moderated by Rafael Di Tella, Professor of Business Administration, Mr. Lanata addressed issues related to Argentina and Latin America, including the struggle between government and media beyond populism, and the pending issues of justice throughout the region.

January Student Programs in Latin America
This past January, DRCLAS organized four student programs and provided support to six faculty-led programs in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru, serving Harvard graduate and undergraduate students. The DRCLAS overseas offices welcomed a total of 105 Harvard students, who participated in public and rural health, engineering, community service, internship, and mentoring programs. New Executive Director in Brazil Office
In January, Vinicius Licks was named the new Executive Director of the DRCLAS Brazil Office, taking the place of Jason Dyett, founding Executive Director of the Brazil Office, and current Managing Director of Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative. We congratulate Mr. Licks for his new appointment and give him a warm welcome to the Center. We would like to also express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Dyett for his exceptional commitment and contributions to Latin America, DRCLAS, and the Harvard community at large, over the past several years.

Summer Workshop:
Journalism Across the Globe
This summer, Global Studies Outreach at Harvard will present a four-day workshop for K-12 and community college educators entitled Journalism: Production and Consumption Across the Globe.
