Transforming lives of people with disabilities, visual impairments and special needs through the use of assistive technology

Dear family, friends and supporters

As 2016 is well and truly underway, we have some very exciting news we want to share with you.

In the last few weeks we have been able to award FOUR grants to some very worthy beneficiaries.

We have included their stories below for you to see how much the money raised so far really does change lives!

Jasmine's Story

Jasmine is a young adult with a number of complex conditions, including selective mutism, autism, and dyspraxia and dyslexia. This means that she is unable to communicate - her mother is her "voice". Outside the family home she is vulnerable as she unable to tell anyone if she is hurt or in pain.

The grant was used to fund the Prologuo2go communications software for her iPad.

Her mother says "this will open up her world to help her communicate with her teachers and family members. We are sure it will give Jasmine the confidence to communicate in a way she feels comfortable".

Kyle's Story

Kyle is 11 years old. He has language impairment, multi sensory disorder, autistic traits and learning difficulties. These conditions make his life difficult and hinder both his educational and social growth.

The grant was used to fund an iPad so that Kyle can use a number of assistive applications to help him communicate and learn.

His mother tells us "You have made such a positive impact on Kyle's life and future development ...before Kyle struggled doing his work as he can barely write, spell or draw, but that has changed with the amazing apps on the iPad, he actually looks forward to learning now".

Harry's Story

Harry is 13 years old. He has various conditions, including autism, global developmental delay and epilepsy. This means he struggles with communication as he is non-verbal, with the mental capability of a small child.

The grant was used to fund an iPad so that he can watch DVDs and communicate with his family using the Prologuo2go communications software.

His mother thanked us saying "you have made a young man VERY happy indeed".

Jessica's Story

In our previous newsletters, we told you about Jessica who was born with a rare neurological disorder called Angelman Syndrome.  Jessica cannot speak and relies on her mum to understand her facial expressions and body language to in order to communicate.

We observed first hand, how assistive technology could  help Jessica and we launched a campaign with this video.
The campaign received a tremendous response and we raised over £4,000 towards the cost of an EyeGaze system.

Since then, having reassessed Jessica's needs and capabilities, her mother decided that a solution using 2 iPads and a variety of assistive communications software would go a long way to help open up Jessica's world.

So we awarded her a grant of £2,000 to fund this solution which included applications such as  Prologuo2go, Go Talk Now, Pictello and Scene Speak.

Now we plan to continue to run Jessica's campaign and all the monies raised will go towards helping people like her who have Angelman Syndrome and who may need high technology solutions such as EyeGaze. So please make a donation if you wish to support this campaign.

Fundraising News

We mentioned in our last newsletter that Pankhurst House at Surbiton High School  nominated us as one of the charities they are supporting this school year. So far, as a result of their fundraising efforts which included a fashion show, and also Dave Webb's regular and very creative bake sales, they have raised a considerable amount.

Thank you all for your amazing fundraising efforts and keep up the good work!!

Fundraising Events

We still have 4 remaining places for the Nightrider Event on June 4th/5th 2016.

This is an exciting 60k or 100k moonlit cycle ride past London's most iconic landmarks.

If you are up for the challenge and would like to raise money for us at the same time, why not join Team JSF? Please visit our website for registration details.

We are thrilled that we have been able to help so many individuals.

But we can't stop here!

We already have grant requests in the pipeline from one person with Multiple Sclerosis and another one with Muscular Dystrophy.

We are working hard to raise more funds so that we can continue to transform lives, but we cannot "do what we do" without your support.

There are many simple, innovative and fun ways you can get involved. Please check out our, Donation,  Get Involved
and  Fundraising pages for more information.

Also many of you have asked us if you can make regular monthly donations and, of course, the answer is ..... YES! Just click here to start your monthly giving.

So that's it for now until our next update. Can we take this opportunity to say another HUGE thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us.

Best wishes

Sheila, Mala, Ian and Shereen
