Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce's YEA! Held Investment Panel Presentations at FAU Jupiter

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), a program of the Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, held their Investment Panel Presentations on March 10 at FAU Jupiter's LLS Auditorium. Two dozen students from grades 7-12 pitched business start-up ideas to an eight-person panel of local business people, who divided up $10,000 in awards. Sophia DeRosa, 16, from The Benjamin School was choosen to advance to the YEA regional competition. Her business, Beat the Stigma, will be an on-line learning center for teenagers. Over the past 10 weeks FAU Jupiter has been hosting the program on campus that helps students develop business ideas. Read More.

Student Making Strides in Her Research Thanks to Shared Facilities Agreement

Ye Sun, a graduate student in the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) Integrative Biology and Neuroscience (IBAN) program is currently working on her ambitious Ph.D. project. Her research is integrating 2-photon microscopy and electron microscopy by using 2-photon microscopy to induce the formation of new spines in living neurons. The challenge of her project is the small size of each spine. Fortunately, MPFI’s Electron Microscopy Core acquired the Automatic Tape-Collecting Ultramicrotome (ATUMtome) in 2015. Continuous access to this newly developed tool has been very helpful to Sun’s project. Other FAU students have access to this Electron Microscopy Core thanks to the shared facilities agreement between FAU, Max Planck Florida and Scripps Institutes. Read More.

FAU's Max Planck Scholars to Present Research at SYNAPSE

FAU undergraduate students students (pictured left to right) Monique Tromp, Michael Leary, Nicolas Tran, Jana Olivova and Danick Joseph have been invited to present their research completed at Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience at the Symposium for Young Neuroscientist and Professors of the South East (SYNAPSE) annual conference in April. All five students have been serving as Max Planck Scholars since August 2015. The MPFI Scholars Program provides undergraduate science majors the opportunity to gain intensive lab research experience learning from some of the world’s best neuroscientists in a state-of -the-art research facility.

Annual IB Retreat Convenes 120 Students and Faculty

A total of 120 graduate students and faculty members attended the 8th Annual Integrative Biology Retreat (IB) on Feb. 19. The students consisted of current IB Ph. D. students and 8 incoming students. The 70+ Integrative Biology Ph. D. students work with faculty in several different departments (Biology, Biomed, Psychology and Chemistry) and at partner institutions (such as Scripps and Max Planck Florida). The annual retreat fosters collaboration by bringing the members of the IB community together on the Boca Campus for one day each year to discuss ongoing research, celebrate the accomplishments, learn about professional development opportunities and enjoy talks by invited guest speakers. This year’s guests were distinguished alumni Stephanie Liberos and keynote speakers Drs. Rindy Anderson and Casey Klofstad.

Honors College Names Scholarship in Dean’s Honor

The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College celebrated Jeffrey L. Buller’s successful ten years as Dean with a “Roast ‘n’ Toast” on Feb. 24. In Buller’s honor, the College established a scholarship endowment in his name, so his legacy lives on after his departure on June 30.

Jupiter's LLS Executive Director René Friedman Retires

| René Friedman, Executive Director of the FAU Lifelong Learning Society in Jupiter, retired on January 1, 2016. She began her journey at FAU in 1997 when she was tasked to build a quality LLS program in northern Palm Beach County. She started the program with 122 members in the spring of 1997 and today the membership exceeds 8,000.
René worked tirelessly to ensure the LLS curricular offerings provided quality program choices that reflected the diverse needs and interests of the area’s population. Over the course of her tenure, she brought exciting additions to the program, worked with donors and sponsors to bring in world-class speakers and always found new ways to bring the best of FAU into the LLS setting. Her strong leadership with development is evidenced by the presence of the beautiful, vibrant LLS complex. A walk through clearly shows the hours of dedication, thoughtful planning, attention to details and continuing devotion she had consistently given to LLS.
The above only points out a few of her many accomplishments in the role of Executive Director. We thank her for all of her contributions she made to Florida Atlantic University and the FAU Lifelong Learning Society. We wish her happiness in the upcoming years and we look forward to continuing to work with her in her role as an involved LLS patron.
