We want to know - What's YOUR vision?

We've been meeting with our kids to discuss what their visions (goals) are for the future. What do they want to accomplish in the next year? What do they want to do when they grow up? What do they want for their community?

Now we want to hear from YOU! Email rebeccar@veracourt.org with your vision  -
both for yourself and for your community.

Our community members' visions will be featured in future newsletters* and it will help us plan programming for both of our neighborhood centers.

The strongest part of a community center is the community itself - send in your vision today.
Thank you!

Rockstars of the Month

Reading and writing is something a lot of us likely take for granted. For some of our elementary school kids though, the traditional teaching methods do not work. Luckily, these kids are fearless motivated learners. Despite initial setbacks, they are determined to share their voice with the world.

The harsh reality: Studies show that children that do not read proficiently by third grade are FOUR times less likely to graduate from high school.
The AWESOME reality: Our second graders in Early Literacy rose their literacy levels by .5 to 1.5 grade levels above their pre-assessment point. Way to go!
Vera Court Neighborhood Center and UW-Madison School of Education developed Early Literacy, a program designed to offer one-on-one support to second graders with lower reading-proficiency levels. These sessions go way beyond worksheets and flashcards. Rather, these sessions are all about creating a love for writing and showing these kids that they are valuable and their ideas are important enough to put on paper. Innovative teaching methods include pairing each kid with an international pen pal, and allowing the kids to teach each other in the areas they excel.
This month, we want to recognize both the dedicated staff and volunteers for never giving up on our kids' success, and our amazing second graders for taking ownership of their learning.

These kids deserve a high five! Come visit Vera Court Neighborhood Center to congratulate our writing rockstars in person and to learn about our other programs. Contact Rebecca Ressl at rebeccar@veracourt.org.
Donor Spotlight
Thanks to East Madison/Monona Coalition of the Aging's (EMMCA) donated services, Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center's senior program is growing!
New services will include case managers that can visit you in your home and help with applying for FoodShare benefits, Medicare, housing, and utilities. Additionally, they run a day center, host breakfasts at Cranberry Creek every Friday, and lead various outings and programs. They would love to meet you and learn what services or programs you would like through the senior program. The case managers will be at BLW several times in the next month, including the next food pantry day on Wednesday, April 20 so be sure to come by and say hi! Interested in receiving services? Call EMMCA at 608-223-3103 or stop by BLW to learn more.

There are lots of ways to give! Whether you can offer donated services like EMMCA, a Wish List item, or a contribution towards our programming, you will make a huge difference. Contact Rebecca Ressl at 608-246-8372 or rebeccar@veracourt.org to learn more or donate today.
