The Bothy Project are proud to introduce a new monthly newsletter keeping you up to date with our ongoing activities and opportunities. We are a growing network of small-scale, off-grid art residency spaces in distinct and diverse locations around Scotland and beyond. Our objective is to create platforms for artists and researchers to journey and explore the history, landscape and people in the areas surrounding the bothies. The Bothy Project are looking to grow the network, creating new partnerships with a broad range of organisations, artists, companies and sponsors to create an exploded network of bespoke off-grid dwellings.

Shelters exhibition at Kirkcaldy Galleries until 5th June

Shelters is a major touring exhibition exploring the themes of shelter, off-grid living and self-build construction, curated for Fife Contemporary Art & Craft at Kirkcaldy Galleries by Bobby Niven, director of the Bothy Project as part of Scotland’s Festival of Architecture 2016. The first part of exhibition looks at the history of Lloyd Kahn’s iconic California-based Shelter Publications through an immersive installation of photographs and stories that highlight the human need and drive to find and make shelter.  Lloyd Kahn is a major figure within the international off-grid, self-build movement inspiring the Bothy Project and many others to build small spaces of their own. Read more on our website here.

Pig Rock Bothy

As part of their ongoing programme at Pig Rock Bothy, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art are hosting an exhibition of work by artist Lauren Printy Currie.

Lauren Printy Currie’s exhibition in Pig Rock Bothy loosely explores ideas around language as object, and the relationships between poetry and sculpture. Entitled Devices, individuals and events the artist presents segments of an epic poem she has been writing since 2008, which is displayed as a work of visual art alongside a series of images of her belongings. In the poem Currie writes about personal experiences and outward observations; reflecting on many things such as daily performances enacted and domestic rituals.

The exhibition runs 27th May − 26th June 2016 and has been made possible with the support of Cove Park; an organisation which runs a programme of residencies for both individuals and collaborating groups operating across all art forms, offering time, space and freedom to make new work and to find new ways of working.

Pig Rock Bothy, located on the grounds of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, was commissioned in 2014 by the Scottish National Galleries to provide a venue for a varied programme of talks, performances and events and exhibitions as part of Generation - an exhibition celebrating 25 years of contemporary art in Scotland. More information about the exhibition and Pig Rock Bothy here.
