2016 HFFI Preservation Award Winners!

E. Boyd Graves Preservation Award
Sugar Shack Donuts—For the innovative adaptive reuse and respect for historic character while renovating 801 William Street, previously a gas station, to be a donut shop.
 Washington Heritage Museums/Mary Washington House—For the dedicated efforts, in conjunction with fellow organizations, to renovate and maintain the Mary Washington House garden and outbuildings.
Fahmey Abdelatey & the Fredericksburg Architectural Review Board (ARB)—For their combined efforts resulting in the sensitive infill project located at 1317 Charles Street.
Dr. Edward Alvey Educational Award
Fredericksburg Circuit Court Archives—In recognition of the new archive facilities and the outstanding work done by the staff and volunteers to assist researchers and conserve Fredericksburg’s court history.
President’s Exceptional Service Award
Nancy Moore—In recognition of her multifaceted work to support Fredericksburg’s historic preservation efforts.
President’s Special Recognition Award
Ronald Shibley—In honor of his generous donation of his remaining inventory of In Fredericksburg: The Past and Presence of an Old Virginia Town.
The Lillian D. Reed Volunteer Award
Leslie Pugh & Richard Hansen—For their many years of volunteering and dedication to HFFI, including 9 years each on the Board of Directors and serving on various committees throughout that time.

HFFI and Fredericksburg Country Club Easement
As announced at HFFI’s Annual Meeting, the Board has entered into a protective easement agreement with the Fredericksburg County Club (FCC) to preserve and prevent the development of its historic 141-acre tract south of the City. The main building on the property, “Smithfield Plantation,†dates from the early part of the nineteenth century. The building and property were the site of significant Civil War battle action and preparations during the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg.
HFFI has been holding such easements for much of its 60 years. Most, but not all, are on properties within the city limits. In 2012, HFFI entered into an agreement on a property in Orange County adjacent to the Wilderness Battlefield.
In the case of the FCC, this agreement protects the tract from development pressure and saves the riverfront area as well. FCC also receives tax credits. In addition, FCC is contributing $20,000 to HFFI to support preservation programing.
Speaking for HFFI’s Board of Directors, member Scott Walker pointed out that both the area and HFFI have changed in the last 60 years. Thus, this easement is representative of those changes. “There are many more historical sites being threatened daily. In accepting this easement, we can assist the country club, as well, in preserving its strategically placed property. Even seemingly ordinary things—like barns—need preservation assistance.â€

Spring House Tour —April 23
As a thank you to our members, the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation would like to invite you to a free, members-only tour of Fall Hill, one of the oldest homes in Fredericksburg. Expert tour guides will lead you in exploring the house and grounds of the estate, followed by refreshments in the garden.

The Fredericksburg Memorials Advisory Commission is seeking nominations to the City’s Wall of Honor for 2016.
Nominees must have made significant contributions to the welfare of the City and the betterment of society. They must have passed away at least 1 year ago. Family members may not make nominations.

Luau for Preservation!

The Historic Smithfield-Brooke Foundation, the non-profit dedicated to the preservation of the Smithfield plantation home that is now used as the clubhouse at the Fredericksburg Country Club (FCC), will be hosting a fundraiser on May 27, 2016, from 6–11 p.m. All proceeds from the event will go toward the repairs of the building’s chimneys damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
