DEMETER Summer School

On 24-26 August 2016 a unique Summer School will take place in Leuven, Belgium. The aim of this Summer School is to bring PhD students and postdocs together to learn and discuss about the “Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles“. The summer school consists of 12 lectures, which are provided by world class experts. The DEMETER Summer School is co-organised by the EU H2020 project REMAGHIC and the  RARE3 KU Leuven Cluster (Industrial Research Fund Knowledge Platform on rare earth recycling and other critical metals). More details about the programme content and the registration procedure can be found here.

DEMETER PROJECT
DEMETER is the European Training Network for the Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles ((H)EVs). In this project 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) are trained by a leading consortium of universities, research institutes and manufacturers. DEMETER develops innovative, eco-friendly solutions for both (H)EVs that are already on the market and for the (H)EVs of the future. Read more about the project.
NEW PROJECTS
EU H2020 REMAGHIC
This SPIRE project, which started in October 2015, is focused on contributing to Europe’s rare earth recovery and magnesium recycling technologies, improving the efficiencies of these processes and advancing the technology readiness levels for a new generation of industrial processes. The project is led by CIDAUT. Considering the link with the rare earth and automotive industry, REMAGHIC will interact with DEMETER during the course of the project.

NEW PAPERS
The University of Birmingham team published a milestone paper on the use of hydrogen to separate and recycle NdFeB magnets from electronic waste. This work serves as a benchmark for the recycling research to be performed in DEMETER. Full reference: A. Walton, et al., The use of hydrogen to separate and recycle neodymium-iron-boron-type magnets from electronic waste, Journal of Cleaner Production, 104, 236-241, 2015.  Download paper here

Policy Brief on ERECON Report
DEMETER’s twin project, EU FP7 MC-ITN EREAN, has just published a milestone Policy Brief with respect to the recycling recommendations published in the final report of the European Rare Earths Competency Network (ERECON). The discussion in this Policy Brief is also vital for the DEMETER project, as DEMETER focuses on both NdFeB and SmCo permanent magnets in automotive applications.
