With the information found in this newsletter, you will be able to help students:

Grade 5
  • C1.2 describe the short- and long-term effects of alcohol use, and identify factors that can affect intoxication
  • C2.3 demonstrate the ability to apply decision-making, assertiveness, and refusal skills to deal with pressures pertaining to alcohol use or other behaviours that could later lead to addiction
  • C3.3 identify personal and social factors that can affect a person’s decision to drink alcohol at different points in his or her life
Grade 6
  • C1.1 describe the range of effects associated with using cannabis and other illicit drugs
  • C1.2 identify people and community resources that can provide support when dealing with choices or situations involving substance use and addictive behaviours

Impaired!
Suggested grade level: 7/8
From PE Central

Purpose: To help students discover how drug and alcohol use diminishes our ability to perform tasks that require manual dexterity, such as driving a vehicle.

Materials:
  1. One pair of gloves or mittens for each team
  2. One screw and corresponding nut for each team
  3. One pair of sunglasses for each team (lenses of which have been covered with glue (and the glue is now dry)
  4. A stop watch

Activity:
  • Divide the class into equal teams, 5-6 students per team (rows work best for this activity)
  • Explain that each person must thread the nut all the way onto the screw and off again.Wen they have finished, pass to the next teammate and repeat the process until the entire team has completed the task. Record each team's time.
  • Repeat this process incorporating the gloves into the task and record each team's times.
  • Once again repeat the process incorporating the sunglasses into the task - also recording the time it takes each team to accomplish the task

Discussion Ideas:
  1. How are the gloves and the sunglasses impairing you? Link to the way drugs and alcohol impair you.
  2. Compare the time each team took to complete the three different tasks, how can this relate to the impact of drugs and alcohol on reaction time?
  3. List daily tasks (even some jobs) that would be influenced by alcohol and other drug use?

Drug Prevention Song / PSA
Suggested grade level 5/6
From Discovery Education

Purpose: Students will be able to describe the effects of drugs on the human body, both short-and long-term consequences.

Activity:
Step One: Research
  • Students work in small groups to research different types of illegal drugs
  • Students can compile a list of questions that they wish to answer about their assigned / chosen drug
  • Questions may include things like:
  • What does this drug look like?
  • What does it do to you (your mind/body)?
  • Why do people use drugs?
  • Who uses drugs?
  • Are there other names for this drug?
  • Where do people get drugs?
  • What do young people generally think of others who do drugs?
  • What are the laws against young people using these drugs?
  • Where can you go for help when using drugs?

Step Two: Performance
  • Once the research is complete, have students develop a creative way to share what they have learned, including the importance of making healthy choices for themselves and their school community.
  • Suggestions include a song, rap, poem, short-story, video or Public Service Announcement about their drug.
