PLATINA 2 set up a European expert platform for knowledge exchange on inland waterway maintenance and prepared a Good Practice Manual for Inland Waterway Maintenance for waterway administrations.
Continuous maintenance is key for competitive waterway infrastructure. However, “everyday” maintenance work often does not get the attention it needs. There is a lot of potential to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of waterway maintenance in Europe.
The focus of this manual lies on navigational fairway maintenance of free-flowing rivers. It illustrates an improved fairway maintenance cycle, provides you with a collection of dedicated knowledge, analyses of practice & lessons learned and recommendations for implementing efficient fairway maintenance.
In addition, the manual lists further topics in need of discussion such as lock maintenance, long-term analysis of measures or interplay of structural and maintenance measures. Some of these topics will be taken up by initiatives after PLATINA 2, e.g. within a study on the “Specification of the Good Navigation Status concept” (2016–2017).
