Preserving Southington's Natural Heritage

Welcome to our first E-Newsletter! Here we hope to share with you our special events and accomplishments this year.

2016 Annual Dinner

Members and supporters of the Southington Land Trust gathered on Thursday, May 19 to celebrate our past year and learn from Forester Eric Hanson on benefits of caring for our local forests and woods.

Restoring Habitats

Earth Day: Southington Land Trust members were hard at work in honor of Earth Day turning an overgrown area into a flower bed on the Rails to Trails. Our hope is to clean up one small area at a time. Be sure to enjoy the scenery while on the trail.

At the Wedgewood Sanctuary, we planted a garden for pollinators and butterflies. Eastern Red Cedars were also planted along the property and invasive Garlic Mustard was removed. All plantings were of native species. This activity will beautify the property while enhancing habitat!

Bluebirds: Earlier this spring six nest boxes were installed in the grassy field on our Tomasso property. This was done with the help of one of our neighbors who built and set up the boxes for us. So far there has been nesting by both Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows which is encouraging since it usually takes awhile for birds to move into a new territory. This is one of the ways SLCT is trying to restore habitat for native species that have been affected by loss of breeding areas. If you have never seen either of these birds, google some images they are beautiful!

Healthy Family FunFest

Thank you to all who came out to the Healthy Family Fun Fest. It was an exciting, fun-filled day with health information, speakers, demonstrations, and activities for everyone from children to seniors. We were able to share information on our properties and what we are doing to preserve them. There were also prizes for visitors to our booth! Hope to see you there next year!

Christmas Tree Fundraiser

Once again we had another successful Christmas Tree Fundraiser. SLCT chipped/recycled over 120 trees and raised close to $2000! A big thank you to everyone who helps to make this event a success year after year. A special thank you to Superior Rental and Camp Sloper for their continued support.
