Year 12 University Information Evening
Earlier this month around 80 Year 12 students and their parents attended an information evening dedicated to explaining the programme of Higher Education opportunities and events available for them to access.
Presentations also included advice on immediate priorities for students during the rest of Year 12, enabling them to maximise their progress and hence also their choice of HE institution.
Higher Education Co-ordinator, Mr George Green, introduced the main presenter, James Ringer, Deputy for Student Recruitment at Goldsmiths, University of London.
James is very experienced in University recruitment, having worked in this field for Queen Mary and Reading Universities. He drew on all this experience to deliver an entertaining talk on selecting the right course at university, seeing passed the marketing elements of open days and prospectuses.
Most memorable were his pictures of filthy student accommodation and diet - showing a loaf of bread developing a healthy crop of penicillin!
Greeted by a mixture of horror and laughter from the audience James emphasised that a lack of personal organisation and motivation at University can lead to difficulties in a students financial arrangements.
He also recognised that although the prospect of postgraduate debt can put off applicants and their parents, early planning can diminish many of these problems with student loan repayments based on earnings rather than the size of the debt.
West Hatch High School has an experienced team of HE advisers who mentor students through every stage of their Sixth Form life, resulting in almost all students moving on to their first choice university.
