Teaching Data Journalism

Data journalism is thriving, but are journalism educators keeping up? Not yet. Muckraker Meet-Ups Everywhere

'Tis the season for networking, with GIJN members busy around the world: Last weekend IRE's NICAR conference, the mother of all data journalism meets, drew a record 1050 people to Denver to share tips and tools. In Berlin, the 2nd Logan CIJ Symposium brought together journalists with artists, whistleblowers, and security experts to battle "secrecy, surveillance, and censorship." In Bogota, Consejo de Redacción's 9th Colombian Investigative Journalism Conference took place. Coming up: the Int'l Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy; Dataharvest outside Brussels; and IRE's annual shindig in New Orleans. GIJN will be at all three events, so be sure to say hello. Crowdfunding's Big Potential

Can crowdfunding help save journalism? María Teresa Ronderos, director of the Open Society Foundations' Program on Independent Journalism, writes about successful examples. Crowdfunding, she says, “is not just about getting the money; it is about creating a faithful community of readers."
