EMAHSN news and announcements

Search begins for our new Managing Director
At the end of July 2016 our Managing Director, Professor Rachel Munton, will retire after a 38-year career dedicated to improving patient care and leadership.

Starting as a Healthcare Assistant, Rachel has worked at every level of the NHS from student, staff and senior nurse to clinical manager and director of nursing, and ultimately to regional and national positions that have contributed significantly to strategic health service innovation.

Rachel’s dedication was recognised in 2014 when she was highlighted as one of the most inspirational women working in the NHS.

Rachel joined EMAHSN in 2013 and was instrumental in setting up the organisation.
EMAHSN Independent Chair, Martin Hindle, said: “Rachel has committed her entire career to improving services for patients. As a result of her hard work and passion she will leave EMAHSN as a robust and sustainable organisation with a cohesive, skilled team and a strong reputation both nationally and locally.

“We are now starting our search for a new inspirational, creative and skilled Managing Director who will lead EMAHSN into the next two years of our licence."

Visit our recruitment website for full details. The closing date is Friday 8 April.

Clinical programme and project updates
Mental health call for innovations update
Light bulb image showing ideas and brainstormingFollowing a region-wide Innovation Exchange event which brought together mental health professionals from throughout the East Midlands, there has been an outstanding response to EMAHSN’s ‘Call for Proposals’, with 44 submissions received.

Calls for Proposals are used to identify proven innovative health projects, products, services and processes - based on a specific health challenge – that receive EMAHSN funding and expertise to spread at pace and scale.

We invited 13 organisations to pitch their ideas to an expert and independent panel. The successful projects will be announced during the summer.
Cancer – eHNA project gets underway
An innovative cancer project has launched in the East Midlands with support from EMAHSN. The eHNA (Electronic Holistic Needs Assessment and Care Plan) project, is a collaboration with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support and will involve patients, healthcare professionals and commissioners within primary and secondary care services. It brings a previous paper-based service into a more accessible digital format, saving time and money by enabling patients to fill in their own information.

Contact EMAHSN project manager Fiona Kilpatrick for more information.
Older people living with frailty – regional benchmarking
EMAHSN’s Older People Living with Frailty programme is leading an initiative to support effective benchmarking of services across East Midlands NHS acute trusts.

The programme seeks to enhance the experience of older people living with frailty by supporting the trusts to develop a consistent approach across the region. For example by identifying areas of excellence and developing action plans for quality improvement.  The programme also focuses on urgent and emergency care settings.  We will be holding an event on 24 May in Derbyshire to update stakeholders on our benchmarking work. Visit our website for more information.
Flo - Simple Telehealth Action Learning event
This event on Tuesday 26 April will share Flo’s recent success, outcomes, future developments and users’ experiences.

Flo is a Technology Enabled Care Service (TECS) that uses SMS/texting to empower patients to take more control of managing their own care. A number of Academic Health Science Networks – including EMAHSN – are supporting the spread of Flo, and indications are that it can generate significant efficiencies (for example by reducing the need for home visits) and improve patients’ quality of life.

The event takes place between 9am and 12noon at the Richard Herrod Centre, Carlton (near Nottingham). To book contact Natalia Remizovsky.
National recognition for wristbands innovation
Example of an oxygen wristbandA cost effective innovation developed by an East Midlands consultant is to receive an award from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The project, pioneered at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust by Dr Gillian Lowry, uses coloured bands to identify oxygen levels for each patient, reducing the risk of medication errors.

With EMAHSN support the project is being spread both within and outside the East Midlands. Junior doctors working at two of these organisations - Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - are to receive a Learning to Make a Difference award from the RCP.

They collaborated to pilot the wristbands on a 33-bed respiratory ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, registering significant improvements. The results will be presented at this year’s RCP annual conference. Plans are being developed to expand the project to other hospitals in the trust. The wristbands were also highlighted as an innovative solution in the recent CQC report for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where the bands have also been trialled.

Contact Dr Gillian Lowrey, Respiratory Consultant Physician for further details.
Stroke Rehabilitation – helping navigate patients to support
EMAHSN’s Stroke Programme has worked with service users and providers to develop a series of directories that inform stroke survivors about the care available within their local area following discharge from hospital – the first time this information has been summarised in one place.

The directories are being used by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Single patient satisfaction questionnaire for stroke survivors

Working in partnership with stroke teams from provider organisations across the region, EMAHSN has developed a single patient satisfaction questionnaire for the teams to use. All stroke teams across the East Midlands are signed up to the questionnaire – helping to share good practice and highlight areas for improvement that can be addressed through ongoing collaboration between service providers.

Contact Hazel Sayers, Stroke Programme Manager for more information.
ABHI and AHSNs form ground-breaking partnership
England’s 15 Academic Health Science Networks have signed an agreement with ABHI (the Association of British Healthcare Industries, the industry association for the UK medical technology sector). Industry and Enterprise Programme
Supporting industry and NHS commissioner collaboration

EMAHSN is exploring with the East Midlands CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) Congress the potential to build collaboration with healthcare businesses – identifying potential industry partners that have innovative solutions to our region’s health challenges.

A commissioner / industry listening event during March will provide the CCGs with an opportunity to outline the major challenges that may feed into Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) – 5 year blueprints for service transformation currently being developed by health and social care partners.

As well as identifying current and future gaps that innovative products, systems, services and processes could fill, EMAHSN is keen to support industry to gain insight into the health commissioning process. With this in mind feedback from the listening event will be available online later in March, and provisionally scheduled for 18 May we are planning a further health / industry Innovation Exchange – details will be announced as soon as possible.
