DIE BESTEN TÜREN BERLINS "PLUS 1"
EINE KAMPAGNE STELLT SICH VOR

05/04/16

19h00

FAHIMI BAR

GRANDBROTHERS live in Berlin

12/04/16

21h00

BOMAYE! presents: MBITHI OF JUST A BAND - Book Presentation & Party

15/04/16

21h00

ACUD MACHT NEU

Mbithi of Just A Band (Kenya)
Panel Discussion/Book Presentation
Party

Nairobi’s Just A Band are up there with the biggest pop stars of Kenya – in spite of, or maybe because of their being an exception, a special case in the East African country. Drawing on traditions as diverse as Japanese anime and African mythology, Just A Band is a geek collective which follows a strict DIY ethic. They have been called “Kenya’s first internet sensation”, and over the internet the band members suck in global music trends from pop to avantgarde, which they have transformed into three albums between Deep House, Electronica and Soul up to now.

Together with Blinky Bill and Dan Muli, musician, movie director and DJ Mbithi Masya is the third member of Just A Band. He is currently spending time in Berlin to put the finishing touches to his forthcoming feature film. But he has a whole lot more in his luggage straight from Nairobi: On Friday, April 15, Mbithi presents the Just A Band art and design monograph, Just A Book, just released by Kenya’s leading art publishers, Contact Zones NRB.

In a panel discussion/book presentation from 9pm, hosted by BOMAYE!’s Florian Sievers, Mbithi discusses the phenomenon of Just A Band, his forthcoming movie, Nairobi’s club music scenes, and the latest changes and developments in Kenyan society. Afterwards Mbithi and Florian take turns DJing electronic club music from African countries for what will be the initiation ceremony of the BOMAYE! parties in Berlin. Twende Hepi! (Sheng: Let’s dance!)

About BOMAYE! The Afro Rhythm Computers

Traditions get carried on – in digital forms. It’s still the motherland, but forget about your clichés.  BOMAYE! is programmed by Daniel Haaksman & Florian Sievers

Jay Daniel
Jay Daniel represents a new wave of young talent coming out of Detroit right now. He stormed onto the scene with "Scorpio Rising EP" - a great EP on Theo Parrish's excellent Sound Signature Label, in 2013. He then went on to collaborate with Funkineven on Discipline, out on Apron records as well as putting out another winning record, this time a double on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats label and he has now gone onto launching his own label, Watusi High, coming up with yet another fine EP, "School Dance". Did we mention that the fantastic Naomi Daniel is Jay's mom, too.

Mark Grusane
Former co - owner of the much revered Mr Peabody Record shop in Chicago, Mark Grusane has influenced a whole generation of dj's in Chicago and beyond. He was the go to person for all those rarities when it came to disco, funk, soul and much more. His notoriety as a fierce DJ has seen him cross the oceans and has lead to fresh new audiences falling under his spell in London, Paris, Amsterdam. Mark has gone on to mesmerise us with his signature records for labels such as the Rush hour affiliated - Hour house is your rush as well as a recent fantastic 7" inch for the ace Sound Familiar Label. This will be the very 1st time Mark performs in Berlin and germany as a whole . So come and sample some of that quality, obscure, heart pounding, "Make You Get Up And Move” music.

Lars Bartkuhn
In the mid 90's Lars went onto form Lamaya Productions and now legendary record label NEEDS (not wants) together with his older brother Marek Bartkuhn and DJ Yannick. Needs gained a cult following amongst deep house followers worldwide and it continues to influence many producers and labels to this day. Many of Lars Bartkuhn’s productions have been played, charted and loved by DJs around the globe. Some tracks even heralded as true dance floor classics creating a solid, international fan base. To date Lars has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. After some years away from the dance scene, residing in Brasil, Lars came back with a beautiful EP on Volcov's great, Neroli label recently.  Lars will be debuting for the very 1st time his solo live set on this date.

As usual Tama Sumo & Lakuti will be your hosts for the evening as well as stepping up to the decks with some records too. See you on the dance floor!

GILLES PETERSON x HAVANA CLUB RUMBA SESSIONS

24/04/16

18h00

PRINCE CHARLES

LINE UP
DJ set: Gilles Peterson feat. MC Earl Zinger
Live show: Havana Cultura Rumberos De Hoy feat. Dayme Arocena
Film screening: "Havana Club Rumba Session: La Clave"

06:00 pm doors
07:00 pm film screening (the film runs for 73 minutes)
08:30 pm live show
09:30 pm DJ set

The latest chapter in the longstanding relationship between Gilles Peterson and the music of Cuba, this feature-length documentary by Charlie Inman sees him explore the roots of Rumba.

Featuring interviews with key figures across the island's musical generations, it provides an insight into Rumba's continued significance in a country where a carefully preserved past has long sat side-by-side with innovation. The history of Rumba, inextricably tied up with the slave trade, uniquely intertwines West African and Iberian musical styles. With roots in the Congo, Nigeria, Benin and Cameroon, different African religious institutions such as Ifa, Ekpe and Nkisi were remade in Cuba as Lukumi (Santeria), Palo, Abakua and Arara. As such, the religious and social realities instituted by the African diaspora have a distinct, if complex, connection to the rhythms foundational to contemporary club music.

“Rumba is in every set that I play as a DJ. Being invited to take part in rumba culture, with some of its most influential players, couldn't have made more clear what a vital force it still is in modern Cuba. From the homemade claves you find in most houses to the quinto drums driving Havana's clubs, Rumba influence is everywhere.”

... with kind support from XJAZZ, JAW Family, Beat Kollektiv, OYE Record Store, Black Radio Berlin, ÜBERJAZZ Festival!
