Fundamentally Children
2nd April, 2016
Welcome to this week's newsletter!

Does your child struggle with maths? There are lots of ways  to support children’s maths learning at home without even mentioning numbers - have a look at our play ideas here.

This week we've also been looking at how play can aid a child's understanding of categorisation and comparison. Learning to recognise the similarities and differences between objects helps children's understanding of the world - for example, learning to group objects by shape or colour.
Dr Gummer on Andy Murray's reported Baby Blues on Sky News (30.03.16)
"I think we do put ourselves under an awful lot of pressure as parents because we feel like we have to dust ourselves down and carry on as normal, and actually, 'normal' has changed."

This week Dr Amanda Gummer has been talking to Sky News this week about how Andy Murray's Baby Blues may be affecting his performance on the court.
Dr Gummer was also featured on BOB.fm this week to comment on the Importance of Early Years Development which you can listen to in full right here

Toys and Play

Toys that children can use for sorting or matching, such as shape sorters or jigsaw puzzles, can help them practise categorisation and comparison.

You can also play games like Guess What's in the Box to encourage your child to compare the feeling of objects, or Vehicles Check to compare different types of vehicles.

Apps and Tech

Apps can help children progress their categorisation and comparison skills gradually, with multiple levels games that are fun and rewarding.

Apps to look out for are jigsaw puzzle apps, or games that get children matching or sorting objects.
