Free Report on Running Injuries Part III

In last month's Newsletter we continued with the TOP 5 running related injuries.  Listed below are full descriptions of two (2) more common injuries, and how to take the appropriate steps in getting your body back to it's full ability!

ACHILLES TENDINITIS

Just like the mythological Greek hero, Achilles, runners too are susceptible to ankle pain at that heel cord in the back of the leg.  The Gastrocnemius on top and the deeper Soleus muscles together are the calf, pulling via the Achilles tendon with every step you take, first controlling your body as it passes over
your fixed foot and then finishing off with the actual “push off” to propel you forward.

Early Achilles symptoms:
- Often occur during or after a run, but may progress to constant ache with simple activities such as walking or stair climbing. (Avoid pushing through your pain in the early stages so it does not turn into a tendinosis, meaning a degenerative or more “wear and tear” problem.) Usually there is tenderness along the Achilles tendon itself and in some cases there may also be a bump or thickening noted at the tendon. Pain is often reproducible on the stair leg going down stairs or the pushing off lower leg going up stairs, and certainly with hopping/jumping. Too often injuries get oversimplified down to “stretch it” and using ice or medications. For many, the underlying issues really are abnormal foot mechanics, weakness of their leg-foot-ankle muscles responsible for controlling foot postures on the ground, problems with their same side hip mobility and strength, and opposite side hamstring/hip issues to name a few.

Good News:  Caught early enough, Achilles tendinitis can be treated successfully – without surgery. It’s most often a non-operative condition. When severe enough there are times a Physician may temporarily immobilize a runner in a walking boot to give more significant rest to the tendon, but other medical interventions like injections are not used directly into tendons like the Achilles. You should be able to overcome your Achilles Tendinitis with looking not only at the heel cord but the big picture and the other “friends”.

PLANTAR FASCITIS

This pain is usually felt in the arch of the foot and sometimes is just most noticeable on the undersurface near the bottom of the heel bone (fancy name is the calcaneus). The plantar fascia is a tough, fibrous connective tissue that  extends from your heel bone to your toes. It helps give integrity to your foot, helping especially with controlling the size and shape of your arch.

The Plantar Fasciitis that people get seems to fall into generally one of two categories….high arch feet that have an already very tight plantar fascia the more frequently seen second type, where the arch gets overly flattened (“pronated”) or stretched out. Tenderness is often found along the band-like fibers of the arch and even especially at times at the attachment to the heel bone. Pain often occurs upon weight bearing after being off your feet for a long time, especially waking in the morning. Symptoms may fade with each step and may be minimal or absent during running, only to hurt later in the run or only after or the next day.

Good news:  Plantar fasciitis is most often a non-operative condition. You should be able to find natural, effective, low/no- risk treatments that help you recover. In the unlikely event that Physical Therapy isn’t fully effective at resolving this condition, there are times that an orthopedist or podiatrist will choose to rest your foot in a walking boot, or may even try a steroid injection. Certainly make sure to get your questions answered before choosing to go this route.
Again, this condition like so many others first needs, quality, customized, biomechanically appropriate Physical Therapy usually as the first approach to care.  Discovering WHY the plantar fascia was being overloaded to begin with lies at the heart of the real solution.

MARCH PEAK PERFORMER OF THE MONTH:

Jeff Lancy
Phys Ed.Teacher, Coach, Husband, Father

Before PT:
  • Jeff had severe pain in his neck, left shoulder, and in his finger/thumb which began a day after shoveling the heaviest snow of our 2016 season.
  • He was not slleepping, and was in continuous pain, even after seeking other medical attention for 3 weeks.
  • He had significant weakness in his left arm indicating that there was pressure on those nerves.
                                                       After PT:

Jeff says: " I am feeling a ton better and my arm strength is improving slowly but surely. I am closer to normal each day, and am able to enjoy my vacation in Disney with my family. I am so thankful to Karen & Peak PT for all that they have done and are doing to get me back on track."

Karen says: "Jeff came to peak with not only neck/ shoulder pain, but pinched nerve signs and significant arm weakness. His lack of better progress for three weeks helped Jeff approach PT with great compliance. He bought in 100% and did EVERYTHING that I asked him to. Jeff’s diligence and compliance are the real keys to excellent progress! Congrats Jeff – you’re an awesome example of how choosing early access to Physical Therapy and compliance can help you recover quickly! Just one month till GOLF season! "

Each Peak Performer of the month gets to choose a charity off of our list for us to donate to that month.  Jeff chose " Open Door Mission of Rochester, NY."  Peak Performance is happy to donate this month on Jeff's behalf.
