Mechanical Engineering Professor Emeritus Clifford L. Sayre, Jr. Passes at 88
Retired Mechanical Engineering Professor Clifford L. Sayre, Jr. passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016 due to kidney and heart failure related to Alzheimer's complications. The long-time Silver Spring, Md. resident was a member of the University of Maryland faculty for more than 30 years.


Team Takes Top Honor in DARPA RevCon Competition
A team of engineering students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering took top honors at the 2015 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Field-Reversible Thermal Connector (RevCon) Challenge sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Engineering Course in Social Entrepreneurship Supports Building Wells in Africa
Students in the Mechanical Engineering course 'Engineering for Social Change' chose to support the nonprofit Bread and Water, which works to create clean water sources for communities in Africa.

Bergbreiter Named Director of Maryland Robotics Center
Associate Professor Sarah Bergbreiter (ME/ISR) has been named the new director of the Maryland Robotics Center effective January 2016.

Kim Awarded New US Patent
New patent is designed to optimize energy consumption of a building.   

Design Day Fall 2015
Fall Design Day, held on December 8, 2015, showcased 29 student teams, all featuring original product prototype designs. Thank you to all of our sponsors and judges who made this event a success, and ME alumnus Tim Arnold who donated $15,000 to the Capstone Design Fund!

Li Awarded Society of Engineering Science Young Investigator Medal
Associate and Keystone Professor Teng Li has won the 2016 Society of Engineering Science (SES) Young Investigator Medal.  

 

Han Receives ASME Mechanics Award
Professor Bongtae Han was named the 2016 American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Mechanics Award winner in ASME's Electronic and Photonic Packaging Division (EPPD).

 

Mote Named Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering and former University of Maryland (UMD) President, C. D. Mote, Jr., has been appointed a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).  

 

Professor Emeritus Named to Royal Society of Canada
Professor Emeritus Ugo Piomelli was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).

 

Gabriel Named Associated Member of GERAD
Group for Research in Decision Analysis (GERAD) Names Professor Steven Gabriel an Associate Member

Alumnus Dr. Jeong H. Kim Receives 2016 Horatio Alger Award
Alumni and philanthropist Dr. Jeong H. Kim (Ph.D., Reliability Engineering, ’91), pictured center right, was recognized for his exceptional business leadership and success.

Korsnick Delivers Transforming Energy Lecture at UMD
Alumna and Visiting Committee member Maria Korsnick (B.S. '86), COO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, joined us at UMD to present her lecture "Nuclear Energy's Vital Role in America's Diverse Electricity System" which discussed the strengths of the U.S. nuclear energy industry, its ability to help meet carbon emissions reduction goals, and the transformative changes expected in the coming years.

Sinha Appointed to ASME-IPTI Collegiate Council
Ph.D. student Shayandev Sinha was selected as a 2015-2016 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International Petroleum Technology Institute (IPTI) Collegiate Council member.

Chen Awarded Northrop Grumman Graduate Fellowship in Engineering Education
Graduate student Guang Chen has received the Northrup Grumman Graduate Fellowship in Engineering Education for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Ansari Named Bell Helicopter Engineers on a Mission Scholarship Recipient
Undergraduate student Soophia Ansari has been named the inaugural Bell Helicopter Engineers on a Mission scholarship recipient.

As one of the pioneers in reliability engineering, Professor Emeritus of Reliability Engineering Marvin Roush helped establish the educational program in risk and reliability at the University of Maryland. This fellowship honors Dr. Roush and his contributions to the field of risk and reliability by providing support to graduate students studying reliability engineering.
