Following on from the successful Arts and Humanities in the Digital Age CHASE training programme, a new workshop is open for applications. The training will enable arts and humanities students using archival material to understand how the archive supports and expands knowledge in literary analysis, and how to negotiate the increasingly digitised form of such archival material.
The manuscripts of Samuel Beckett will be used as a case study to discuss the range of issues such as making manuscripts accessible, transcription, encoding, and interpretation.

The training is open to all CHASE funded scholars who will be accessing archival material as part of their doctoral training. Support for attending the training will be given.

Saturday 1 - Saturday 8 October
“Interdisciplinary Expeditions: Navigating Through Space, Place and Time” is a 7-day interdisciplinary research exchange project that aims to explore the concepts of space, place and time through both practice and research. We invite applications from CHASE students to submit their applications for this fully funded opportunity. Located in Nida, Lithuania, students will participate in an intense week long “sandpit” in which they will explore each other’s research, develop new methodological approaches to their work, and, as a result, formulate new project ideas and research trajectories. The project aims in particular to foster cross-institutional collaboration between CHASE researchers and enable the shared exploration of ideas through research and practice.
Applications will close on Monday 25 April. Successful applicants will be announced by Friday 29 April. All of the confirmed project participants will be expected to attend the first group meeting at the Encounters conference on Friday 6 May.

Open to applications from CHASE Students
The aim of ‘Comics Crossroads’ is to bring together a diverse group of postgraduates, early career researchers, and leading scholars working on comics, cartoons, caricature and drawn visual arts from different perspectives and different fields in the humanities. The two-event programme will offer input and output focused training for new researchers, as well as opportunities for networking and sharing research.

Placing Prints: New Developments in the Study of Prints, 1400-1800
Event Report
CHASE funded students Tatiana Bisolatti and Chloe Gilling, along with fellow students and the Courtauld Institutie of Art, recently organised a postgraduate symposium aimed towards 'creating a platofrm for students, early career scholars, collectors and art lovers and established researchers to meet and exchange their research, methodologies and approaches'.
The two day event held on the 12-13 February gained an 'overwhelimg international interest' in their call for papers with the programme including a which included a display of prints Courtauld Prints: The Making of a Collection curated by the organisers and a keynote by Anthony Griffiths, fomer keeper of Prints and Drawings at The Biritsh Museum.
The event was organised with the partnership of Print Quarterly, the scholarly journal dedicated to the art of print, and it was made possible thanks to the generosity of The Courtauld Institute, CHASE, and private individuals.

My placement at the BUFVC by Elena Dirstaru
At the time of writing, Elena was one month in to her four month placement at the British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) and writes about her expereince so far:
"I am working on a research project to do with newsreel cameramen who worked during the war and digitising tapes from a documentary about newsreel cameramen shot in 1981 called 'They Made News'. It is a fantastic opportunity for a film student/filmmaker like me who has only ever worked with digital cameras and footage, as I get to work with film reels... As a documentary filmmaker and someone who shoots her own films, it is an invaluable opportunity to listen to these people talk about their careers and about their techniques, and technologies they used, something that is very useful for my current PhD research in documentary interviews."

Short Story Commissioned by international retailer
 Creative Writing CHASE funded Scholar Sarah Butler (Open University) was commissioned by clothing brand Jigsaw to write a new short story inspired by their new handbag collection. Sarah visited the small, family-run factory in Portugal where Jigsaw's bags are made and created a new piece of fiction called 'Small Hurts', published in Jigsaw's magazine, Style & Truth for Spring/Summer 2016.

Being Human Festival

This year, the festival will return with a programme of activities themed around ‘Hope & Fear’. The theme has been selected both for its capacity to speak to fundamental human traits and for its applicability across disciplinary boundaries in the humanities. Applicants are invited to respond creatively and in ways that probe the rich intellectual possibilities of the theme.

Everywhere and Nowhere: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Symposium on Imagined Spaces

We invite proposals from the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences for reflective talks from 5-‐15 minutes. We particularly encourage talks which reflect on and analyse personal experience, and these may be in any format. We welcome contributions in pairs or groups, talks that use video or audio material, or proposals that diverge in any way from conventional presentation styles.
