Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence

2016 SINAPSE ASM: Submit abstracts!

The deadline for abstract submission for the 2016 SINAPSE Annual Scientific Meeting is now two weeks away (15th April 2016). We encourage SINAPSE members and students to submit abstracts on research that uses MRI, CT, PET, SPECT, EEG, MEG, ultrasound, or human optical imaging. Awards will be given for best proffered paper, best poster (scientific content), and best poster (public communication).

Also, meeting registration is now open. Please book your place early and join us for what will be an exciting programme highlighting developments in clinical and experimental imaging. More details...

Seed Fund Studentships

SINAPSE has awarded funding for five PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The first four studentships have been announced, with three still accepting applications, and details of one more will soon also be posted to our PhD Opportunities webpage.

Postdoctoral and Early Career Research Exchanges

SINAPSE funds are available for early career researchers using medical imaging technologies to spend at least one month with partner organisations in Europe, North America, India or China, in academic year 2015-16 or 2016-17. Because of our excellent track record and feedback on previous exchanges, we have received an increased amount of funding this year to continue supporting this scheme.

Awards of up to £7,500 can be used to provide research training and development opportunities while at the same time building experience of international collaboration with academia and/or industry. Click here for the application form.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2016.

Additionally, funds from the Pools Engagement in European Research (PEER) scheme are available for supporting SINAPSE members to
participate in and compete for European funding. Informal enquiries can be directed to kristin.flegal@glasgow.ac.uk.

RSE Young Academy of Scotland recruitment

Applications are now open for membership of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland, which fosters interdisciplinary activities among emerging leaders from the disciplines of science and humanities, the professions, the arts, business and civil society. Application deadline: 29th April 2016. More details...

Image of the Month: OCT retinal layers

Our first-ever animated Image of the Month for April, courtesy of Dr James Cameron, demonstrates optical coherence tomography (OCT) cross-sectional imaging of the retina which enables 3D reconstruction and reliable automated volume measurements of any retinal layer.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Dr Gillian Macnaught

Gillian Macnaught has recently been appointed as PET-MRI physicist at the University of Edinburgh. Her post is based at the Clinical Research Imaging Centre (CRIC), part of the Edinburgh Imaging network, where a new PET-MRI scanner (Siemens mMR Biograph) will be housed from May 2016. This hybrid scanner was funded by the MRC and is part of UK Dementias Platform Imaging Network. The structural and functional information provided by MRI combined with the high sensitivity of PET imaging makes this scanner an excellent tool for dementia research. It will also be used for cardiovascular research projects. Gillian, who has imaging experience in both clinical and research settings, will provide scientific expertise to multidisciplinary research teams utilising this new technology. She will also engage with the UK Dementias Platform to harmonise acquisition protocols across their Imaging Network.
