HAPPY FAIR HOUSING MONTH!

Spring has finally arrived, and so has Fair Housing Month!
The Fair Housing Act was signed this month in 1968 to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable housing. We encourage everyone, homeowners and tenants alike, to know their rights and report any incidents of housing discrimination that occur against you and your family. Fair housing is your right, regardless of your race, color, national origin, sex, disability, family status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. For additional Fair Housing resources, visit HUD online.

Now that the snow is finally melting, our staff has started thinking about community beautification projects. In fact, we already have TWO volunteer opportunities available! So get involved by registering to volunteer today. With the weather warming up, we'll also be picking up construction on our owner-occupied repair programs. If you're in need of home repairs, you can learn more about the many programs we're currently offering below.

We're looking forward to seeing flowers bloom in the Lower West Side and in the Niagara District!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Simeon, Executive Director

FAIR HOUSING MONTH RESOURCES

April is National Fair Housing month! Unfortunately, housing discrimination is still happening every day.
Help promote fair housing in our communities by displaying a HUD poster in your office, community center, or other gathering spots.

DID YOU KNOW? A TENANT/LANDLORD FACT

Did you know that according to New York State's Tenant Rights, landlords of multiple dwellings must keep the apartments and the building’s public areas in “good repair” and clean and free of vermin, garbage or other offensive material? Landlords
are also required to maintain electrical, plumbing, sanitary, heating and ventilating systems and appliances that are included in the unit, such as refrigerators and stoves, in good and safe working order. If a landlord fails to do so, a tenant can bring these issues before local housing code enforcement.
