Food Additives

Food additives have been used for centuries to enhance the appearance and flavor of food and prolong shelf life.  Do these food additives really “add” any value to your food?

Food additives find their way into our foods to help ease processing, packaging, and storage, but how do we know what food additives are in that box of macaroni and cheese, and why does it have such a long shelf life?

A typical American household spends about 90 percent of their food budget on processed foods and in doing so, they get exposed to a plethora of artificial food additives, many of which can have serious consequences to your health.

Some food additives are worse than others. Here’s a list of the top food additives to avoid:

1. Artificial Sweeteners

2. High Fructose Corn Syrup

3. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

4. Trans Fat

5. Common Food Dyes

  • Blue #1 and Blue #2
  • Red dye # 3 (also Red #40 – a more current dye) (E124)
  • Yellow #6 (E110) and Yellow Tartrazine (E102)

6. Sodium Sulfite

7. Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite

8. BHA And BHT

9. Sulfur Dioxide (E220)

10. Potassium Bromate

This month's bounty:

HARVEST:

Organic Red Russian Kale -Red Russian Kale is considered to be highly nutritious with powerful antioxidant properties. It's also prized for its ability to be eaten as a baby leaf or if left to fully mature. Red Russian Kale has an amazing sweet flavor.

Mizuna - One of the mildest mustard greens, mizuna is high in immune-boosting vitamin C, folate, and iron. It also contains powerful antioxidants linked to decreased cancer risk. Cultivated in Japan since ancient times, mizuna brings an exotic, slightly spicy flavor to the table.
Our Red Russian Kale and Mizuna are from Frog Song Organics in Hawthorne, Florida.

ANIMAL GOSSIP:

Hershey and Mo(u)ose are getting ready for their girl-friends to arrive!  This Saturday the boys have their grooming appointments scheduled to get a fresh clean cut and style.  The sheep have yet to meet each other as this all has been arranged through their adopted Farm Families.  The boys are hoping to look their best and to sweep the ladies off of their hooves.  We will be posting photos of Hershey and Mo(u)ose's make-over very soon.

GOLF BISTRO:

Chef Chris creates a new special everyday using fresh, local ingredients, creating a balance of sweet and salty flavors.  Chris enjoys experimenting in the Golf Bistro kitchen with in season ingredients for our customers to enjoy.  Come by and enjoy one of his daily specials and to see what he is "cooking" up!
