Rural Realities Faced by Service Providers and Women Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence When Navigating the Justice System

Members of this projects are:
Rina Arseneault, Project Lead, Associate Director, MMFC
Martine Paquet, Social Work Consultant, NBASW
Angela Wisniewski, Project Coordinator

Justice system response (encompassing police, courts, legal advocacy, victim services, and child  protection services) can play a pivotal role in “breaking the cycle of intimate partner violence (IPV)” by naming abuse, legitimizing women’s claims, enhancing safety, and connecting women to available supports (Ragusa, 2012).

This study used insights from two First Nations communities, one Francophone community and one Anglophone community to provide a better understanding into how the justice system currently responds to IPV survivors living in rural New Brunswick. The focus was on identifying the challenges that are encountered by IPV survivors with the ultimate goal to foster discussion and collaboration that will improve the experiences of rural IPV survivors when dealing with the justice system.

The full report will soon be available on our website.
