These warmer days mean that more and more whales are wintering over in Sitka Sound. On Thursday, we were anchoring when three curious grey whales came over to check us out. They feed on the bottom by turning on their sides and scooping mouthfuls of delicious bottom stuff, which they strain out their baleen. We got to see this in action.
While walking down the dock, we noticed a little bird struggling to take off in the water. It was rescued by two burly-looking fisherman and handed off to the sailboat guy to turn in to our local Raptor Center.  We wrapped the little (and feisty) storm petrel in a towel and drove it to the center to have a look over. They decided it was just too wet and tired to fly right then, but would rest up and be fine. We'd like to think the bird on the right is the same bird...
A recent stretch of nice weather led the BOB to Silver Bay for an active fly-fishing and sailing trip with friend Zane. It is nice to get out on the water and to try a few fly patterns, even though the only fish caught wasn't quite legal size to keep.
Speaking of good things to consume, on St. Patrick's Day we enjoyed our beer green and local. We love our local Baranof Island Brewery.
We first met John when we bought S/V Oystercatcher (our first sailboat) in Seattle. He started a micro-distillery aboard his sailboat and perfected a vodka and gin recipe. And boy do we mean perfected. It is wonderful stuff, and we'd love to spend more time with him at the Everett Marina near Seattle - though we know we wouldn't get any work done. Note that he is also building an Antarctica-ready aluminum sailboat in the back of the distillery. Very impressed. It's great to see his dreams take off. Here's our friend John at Blue Water Distilling and I know he would love to pour you a cocktail.
April is an amazing month for wildlife in Sitka Sound due to the annual return of millions of herring to lay their eggs. Blain put the sneak on this goshawk, and these humpback whales bubble-net fed right in front of us. The wild critters aren't the only ones that enjoy herring eggs...
No, S/V BOB isn't a submarine, but if it was,
we would rest assured that Midshipwoman M. Anderson
would be able to fire the torpedoes when needed. Aye aye.
