GOPHER is the PhD organization of the University of Groningen, providing a platform for PhD students to develop themselves, to network and to get to know fellow PhD students through educational and recreational events. Every PhD student is welcome to participate in GOPHER’s events and to suggest and organize new events. If you wish to get involved or just join the events, please contact the board at gopher@rug.nl or join our Facebook group for more information. If you are a new PhD student at the University of Groningen, you can find additional practical information on our website.

In April, GOPHER celebrates its first lustrum which is the 5th year anniversary of the organization. Therefore, we packed the month with a lot of awesome events! Make SURE that you do not miss out our Gala; the biggest event of the year!

Friday, April 1st - Pubcrawl

We will kick off this Lustrum month on Friday April 1st (not a joke) with a pub crawl! The crawl will start at a meeting point (TBA) at 20:45 and will end at another meeting point (TBA) at midnight. We specifically selected some bars that are not that familiar, so that you will expand your range of bars to visit at those times that you need to drown all your PhD sorrows.

You will crawl to these 4 pubs in groups which will be made before the crawl, so signing up individually is not a problem, but also friends can stick together. The groups will compete against each other, because in each pub there will be an assignment to do. The group with the most points at the end of the crawl wins an alcohol-related prize.

DATE: Friday April 1st
TIME: 20:45 - 00:00
FEE: 10 euros for PhDs / 13 euros for non-PhDs (includes 4 specialty beers, normal beers, wines or sodas)
LOCATION: meeting point will be communicated to you (somewhere in the city centre)

PAST EVENTS

March 9th - How to write a good application letter and CV for an academic career

A lot of PhD students were interested in improving their application letter and CV. Liesbeth Volbeda (HR Experts) en Hoang Nguyen (Next) informed us about the do’s and don’ts when writing an application letter and CV.

March 11th - Martinus Beer Brewery Tour

PhD students like beer and learning things, so what’s better than learning about the process of brewing beer? During a tour through this young local brewery we gained knowledge about what beer brewing - both an art and a science! - is all about. Also, we got to taste 3 of Martinus’ own beers, which were very nice. It was a very successful event. If you were not present, you should definitely check out this brewery!

March 18th - Printing your Thesis workshop by Ridderprint

In this workshop Ben Riezouw from Ridderprint talked about the ins and outs of printing your thesis. We got a lot of information about the many factors that you have to consider when preparing your thesis to be printed. Also, many questions by the attending PhD students were answered and we got to see some examples of dissertations. Note: the workshop was fully booked quite fast, so if you want to attend the next PYT workshop (probably in June), register as soon as we put the event on Facebook and Calendar!

March 23rd - Improv Comedy Workshop with STHH

A selected group of PhD students learned the basics about Improv Comedy by members of the group Stranger Things Have Happened. They were taught basic techniques to make you aware of the people around you and to listen well to each other to keep the scene running. Through these exercises people got more comfortable on stage which will help them too if they have to present themselves at conferences. Everyone enjoyed the workshop a lot and are looking for more Improv Comedy now!
