By The Fireside

It was unprecedented—the Franklin's enjoyed a vacation visiting family and friends the past couple of weeks. We were able to spend a couple of nights at Rosario Beach, the Walla Walla College Biology Station on Puget Sound, where Jere spent many hours in education for his graduate degree. From there we took a ferry over to the Olympic Peninsula and experienced the Rainforest—on a sunny day!

On February 21, there was a Franklin Family Reunion, where we enjoyed meeting with members we hadn’t seen in a long time. Then we stayed with Jere’s niece and her husband, Kelli and Tim Blais, for a couple of days, where we visited Pendleton Woolen Mills and spent a few hours shopping for things we are unable to get in Canada. The day we left Vancouver, Tim surprised us with tickets to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) where we spent an enjoyable time with Amber’s Aunt and Uncle, Gary and Carol Likes.

The weekend was spent in the home of our long-time friends, Don and Ruth Maddy (our book distributor) in Wahkiacus. Jere was asked to deliver the Sabbath sermon at their church. Our grandchildren sang “Survival of the Unfit” (which they learned at ASI last year) before Jere spoke on the subject of “Waiting”—which he has been experiencing more often since his recent diagnosis.

Linda was able to visit with her brother, mother and sister—the first time since her father’s death. After those heart-warming visits, we enjoyed two sunny days along highway 101 on the Oregon Coast at some familiar beaches examining tide pools, helping grandchildren collect shells and pretty rocks, and visiting Sea Lion Caves for the first time—a very informative and enjoyable exercise (up and down many flights of stairs!).

The apex of our southern trek found us at Angwin, California where we stayed with Victor and Lisa Avina, attended the Angwin SDA church, and visited Elmshaven (Ellen White’s home). Visiting the Avina family has been on our “bucket list” for several years, and we found the visit most fulfilling. Lisa is a veritable encyclopedia of natural remedies. The grandchildren kept asking, “Can Victor come out and play?” We left their home enriched in every way, and ready to face the long trek homeward.

In the Chapel

There were many significant personal experiences in each place we stayed, including Angwin, but the one I (Linda) would like to share involved a short stop at a popular viewpoint just north of Florence, Oregon where we stopped at the picturesque ocean inlet cut into the rocks, sat in the sun for a few minutes, and then continued our southern journey. About twenty minutes down the road, I discovered that my purse was missing—with the majority of our travel money in it! At the very time I wished for more faith, Jere was strong. “It will be there, Linda,” he kept assuring me. “Trust God!” However, I could do nothing but repeatedly voice my sincere doubt; there were hundreds of people stopping by that viewpoint! My purse would be left unattended for at least forty-five minutes, and there weren’t that many honest people nowadays, and besides, where would someone turn it in if they decided to be honest? No, I would never see it again, and that was all there was to it. What would we do, now? My faith and courage were so low that my plea for help could not even be counted as a prayer. I was even afraid to ask the Lord to protect it. Those return minutes seemed like an eternity.

I strained my neck, still audibly bemoaning my inevitable loss as we, once again, pulled into the parking lot. There it was, right on the bench where I left it, with grandson Andrew’s jacket beside it—the most welcomed sight! Though I was grateful, I felt most undeserving because of my lack of faith. I missed a perfect chance to practice faith. Shortly thereafter we read this statement at our regularly scheduled evening worship:

Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling under the power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. And even if they endure the test they will be plunged into deeper distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because they have never made it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have neglected they will be forced to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement. We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving His promises. Angels record every prayer that is earnest and sincere. We should rather dispense with selfish gratifications than neglect communion with God. The deepest poverty, the greatest self-denial, with His approval, is better than riches, honors, ease, and friendship without it. We must take time to pray. If we allow our minds to be absorbed by worldly interests, the Lord may give us time by removing from us our idols of gold, of houses, or of fertile lands. …Our precious Saviour invites us to join ourselves to Him, to unite our weakness to His strength, our ignorance to His wisdom, our unworthiness to His merits. God’s providence is the school in which we are to learn the meekness and lowliness of Jesus. The Lord is ever setting before us, not the way we would choose, which seems easier and pleasanter to us, but the true aims of life. It rests with us to co-operate with the agencies which Heaven employs in the work of conforming our characters to the divine model. None can neglect or defer this work but at the most fearful peril to their souls (Great Controversy, p. 622-623).

This faith, that will trustingly endure all the last day trials is what we need. You might be interested in the name of the viewpoint where I left my purse—The Devil’s Churn!

2016 Family Camp Scheduled

Although we are taking a Sabbatical from the greenhouse business this year, we are planting a big garden and will have plenty of tomatoes in the greenhouse for Family Camp as usual, August 26-September 5, 2016 here at Sanctuary Ranch.

Personal Note from Jere

Thank you so much for your prayers in behalf of my health. I am feeling much better and able to spend my days writing and editing new work. Our pamphlet, On the Borders of Canaan (…the trap that prevented many Ancient Israelites from entering the Promised land has been reset today) has been a challenge, but it is almost finished. Our book distributor has informed us that there are currently fewer than 100 copies of You Can Survive! remaining, so we are in process of editing that manuscript for printing. There are very few edits for the third edition. We hope to soon have it available as an e-book, too.
