Context of the webinar

The White House is calling for a better municipal level innovation and opportunity ecosystem backbone in the February 23, 2016 Technology and the Future of Cities report. A key component of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) strategy is called "City Web”.

Along with his Master of Project Management research into the use of digital economy tools for strategy, management consultant Grant Millin created a way to use Podio for greater collaboration and strategy around the complexities of issues like achieving greater regional and national sustainability. Matched with Sustain NC programming and InnovoGraph capabilities with partner collaboration, this case use of Podio in key ways match the PCAST requirements.

According to PCAST a City Web is "an information-sharing platform would help to extend these innovative activities beyond their local confines, benefiting all cities, including those that lack the capacity to innovate on their own."

"The goal of the City Web is to allow the accumulation and replication of urban solutions and associated data and technologies in ways that benefit cities with different sizes, different technological know how, and different financial capabilities.“ - PCAST

The White House recommends in the report that the International Organization for Standardization standard for innovating and deploying sustainability solutions in municipalities, ISO 37120: 2014, be utilized in City Web work. InnovoGraph already incorporated ISO 37120 in the Sustain NC strategy map last year. Sustain NC is an opportunity to deploy the White House City Web principles now. The programing elements behind Sustain NC, especially greater Podio utilization, can be repurposed for a wide range of education and economic development sector solutions.

About Sustain NC

Sustain NC is a professional development initiative of InnovoGraph LLC nurturing sustainability innovation. The central initiating Sustain NC service project is completion of the North Carolina Clean Power Plan. Part of making that happen is deploying a Smart Grid, Distributed Energy, and Efficiency Program (Smart Grid DEEP).

There is need for a deeper innovation ecosystem across America and the globe using sustainability as a strategy lens. A future nonprofit is on the list of potential tasks. My name is Grant Millin and I own InnovoGraph, I am an innovation strategist, and am the Sustain NC Developer.

There is at least one immediate real world application for this case use of a City Web here in North Carolina. Duke Energy’s Western Carolina Modernization Project includes two relatively small new natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) units. Since Asheville and Buncombe County are one of the first communities in Duke Energy territory to be on the receiving end of Duke Energy’s new NGCC initiative, we deserve to see better information. Duke Energy Progress does claim this early program within their NGCC expansion portfolio is an example of clean power planning. If so, they will welcome what Sustain NC offers and finally ask state governments in their ISO territory to abandon further resistance to the President’s Climate Action Plan.

In many ways North Carolina is developing a clean power plan. The NC-SC Carolinas Energy Future plan may not emphasize strong greenhouse gas reduction strategies, but many of the technologies discussed are the same ones described in optimal advisories on the subject. This Duke Energy program allows for greater focus on efficiency, solar, and “other technologies” like battery energy storage. The Duke Energy program includes City of Asheville and Buncombe County Government launch of an Energy Innovation Task Force in context to what’s called the “Duke Energy Partnership”.

Duke Energy, the NC Department of Environmental Quality, in conjunction with Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, and nonprofits like NC Sustainable Energy Association all met at NC State University a year ago to dialogue around the EPA Clean Power Plan and implementation in North Carolina. While not widely publicized, InnovoGraph obtained the meeting minutes and moved that detailed content from the 90 participants of that event into a Smart Grid DEEP Consortium on Podio workspace.

I have a NC Utilities Commission Petition to Intervene in this local ‘clean power’ program Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience [NC Utilities Commission E-2 Sub 1089]. I have requested deep collaboration with Duke Energy and spelled out what that collaboration looks like in detail in my approved petition. I have submitted an interveners statement requesting Duke Energy declare readiness to adopt the NC Clean Power Plan.

Thank you for connecting with Sustain NC.

Best wishes,
