Early Spring Farm News

April 1, 2016

Dear Farm Friends,

We’re having a nice cool week, but things are starting to heat up on the farm. April through mid-July is our busiest season. While we have been planting since January, now the pace and amount of planting increases quite a bit. Over the last few weeks, we planted out our first two waves of greens, did tons of ongoing work on the greenhouse, including seeding and tending hundreds of trays of baby plants, potting up peppers and tomatoes, and grafting tomatoes. Next week, the new crop of five interns joins our regular crew of eight. We will start off next week with large potato and onion planting days, followed by summer squash (in hoop houses for frost protection) and planting out our third wave of greens. Between rain storms, there is also plenty of tractor work: mowing the lush cover crops, spreading compost, and preparing the soil for all that planting.

FARM FESTIVAL IS BACK!

For the past two years we have taken a break from hosting a harvest festival, but now it’s back! This year’s farm festival will be on Sunday June 26 from 12-5pm. Harvest festivals traditionally happen in the fall, but since we start harvesting in May, we decided to celebrate when the farm is still lush and green and full of the season’s promise. We are going all out this year to try to make the festival a bigger and better event. As in the past, there will a focus on kids games and activities as well as farm tours, food, beer, hanging out under the big oak, music and maybe even contra dancing! Please put it on your calendars and bring your friends!

Your Farmer,
John Tecklin
