Block 7, March/April 2016

Liz Cheney ’88, attorney and political commentator, met earlier this month with students in two political science classes for a spaghetti lunch and discussion at the home of Political Science Professor Tom Cronin. About two dozen students from Cronin’s American Presidency class and Political Science Professor David Hendrickson’s The American Century class attended the talk. Photo by Bryan Oller.

Block 7 is here ... and it's "full steam ahead" towards summer! Has your student made summer plans yet? If they are still at loose ends, encourage them to register for Summer Session! Students often find Summer Session is a great opportunity to get into classes that take too many points during the year, catch-up or get ahead on credits, or meet all-college requirements.

Here is an exciting new opportunity for students who will be seniors in the 2016-17 academic year! At the "Rising Senior Symposium: The Road to Adulting" on May 12 and 13, registered students will spend two days with peers and alumni developing strategies to make the most of the upcoming summer and their senior year. In conference-style sessions, they will learn how to stand out to potential employers, develop their network, and hear from alumni about what they would do again, and what they would have done differently their senior year. This symposium includes a housing extension until Saturday, May 14, at noon. Encourage your junior student to register now through Summit for this exclusive event!

Finally, as students begin to contemplate moving out of their residence halls for the summer, the question of what to do with their stuff inevitably arises. For more information about storage options, see the list under "housing" on the Parent FAQ webpage.

As always, please feel welcome to be in touch with questions or concerns.

COMMENCEMENT 2016

"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."Howard Thurman
Colorado College Class of 2016 Motto

Commencement exercises for the Class of 2016 will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Make plans now to join us for a full weekend of activities, which include the Commencement Dance on Saturday, May 14, at 8 p.m. and Baccalaureate on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. The schedule, including lodging information, will be updated here as information becomes available. Formal invitations for students who are expected to graduate were mailed in early March.

Baccalaureate Blessings
Baccalaureate Blessings are a special part of the graduation tradition for Colorado College students. Each year, parents and families of graduating seniors are mailed an invitation to participate in creating Baccalaureate Blessings cards for their student. Each card hangs throughout Commencement Weekend in the west entrance of Shove Chapel, displaying words of celebration for graduating seniors. Together, these cards form a communal blessing, sharing both individual and collective love and hope for the graduates as they journey forth from Colorado College. Watch the mail for your opportunity to participate! If you have any questions about the program, please contact the Chaplains' Office.

THE COLKET CENTER FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Help Your Student Consider Academic Opportunities Beyond CC
Whether your student is a freshman or a senior, she likely knows of the academic opportunities at CC: block and Half-Block classes, adjuncts, study abroad, even summer research. But what about academic options beyond CC?
While graduate school offers long-term academic study after the baccalaureate, there are also additional short-term options to consider, such as scholarships and fellowships of durations from three weeks to a single year. Read more here about opportunities for your student.

TUTT IN TRANSITION

With less than eight weeks until the end of the semester, preparation is underway to begin a significant transition. Immediately following Commencement festivities, we will begin construction of the new library. In Block 6, the college held a contest for students to name the temporary modular building that will house some library services and study space during the transition. Two students, Elizabeth Lund '16 and Emma Gonzalez '19, submitted the winning entry: Mod Pod. Beginning in April, a new campus group, Team Tutt, will begin its work to support the community during the construction period. View the floor plan and rendering of the modular building and read more about the transition and Team Tutt.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS WEEKEND 2016

Mark your calendar now for Family and Friends Weekend 2016, coming this fall the first weekend of Block 2: Friday, Sept. 30-Sunday, Oct. 2.

Formerly called “Family Weekend,” CC’s Family and Friends Weekend 2016 extends the scope of the event to embrace all of the ways in which students define and experience family. Watch the Family and Friends Weekend website for updated information.

AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL...

...from Associate Professor of Classics, Sanjaya Thakur:
As someone who has spent a great deal of time across Europe, Sicily holds a special place in my heart. I thought I knew what Europe and Italy, in particular, were like, but Sicily always amazes and surprises me. Its beauty and diversity of food, environment, architecture, art, culture and history are stunning! Its strategic position and fertile lands have attracted many conquerors, who have left their mark throughout the island. Sicily's people and beautiful landscapes truly must be experienced in person. I have traveled there for each of the past seven years and look forward eagerly to accompanying this special Block Break Away for alumni, parents, and friends. I invite you to join us this September!

Although there is no substitute for experiencing an event in person, it is not always possible for parents and family members to come to campus. Many events are available via live stream or on demand. See the calendar of upcoming events and plan to join us...virtually!
