John Sorrell presented a CEU on Concrete Paving Options, then demonstrated the distance Dudley Gordon came up short to get on the kid rides at Disney.

March Luncheon Recap

Our March luncheon was sponsored by Alabama Concrete Industries Association (ACIA). ACIA was founded in 1963 to provide a unified voice for companies in the concrete industry.  Whether it be promotion of concrete products, fighting detrimental regulations and legislation, or coming together to tackle common challenges of the industry, the ACIA is working to protect and promote the concrete industry.

ACIA's member companies produce cement, ready mix concrete, concrete blocks, pre-stress and pre-cast concrete, septic tanks, pipes, poles, admixtures and other products allied to the concrete industry.  For more information regarding ACIA and its members, go to http://alconcrete.org/about/.  Or contact John Sorrell at 334.265.0501 and jsorrell@alconcrete.org.

John Sorrell of ACIA was our speaker and he gave us an excellent and educational program on options for using concrete paving.

Let's remember to give our project owners the option on future projects to use concrete paving in lieu of asphalt. As John pointed out, the cost has gotten very competitive and the longevity of concrete over asphalt is substantial.

The Montgomery Chapter AIA would like to thank ACIA for sponsoring, and providing speaker and CEU for the chapter's March meeting.

The Winter Issue typically focuses on the many travel opportunities available to APLA students, either abroad or in studio-related field studies.

Izumi Kuroishi, PhD, Professor of Architecture Theory and History at Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan, will present the final lecture in the APLA’s Spring 2016 Lecture Series: “on the Brink: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs,” on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.  Professor Kuroishi’s research focuses on material culture and ethnographies of architectural space as well as on the idea of interior, and on the relationship among technologies, rituals, and mathematics in the designing of buildings. Her lecture, “Small Houses with Large Dreams: Technology and Design of Prefabricated Houses in Postwar Japan” is in Dudley Commons B6 auditorium and is free and open to the public. The APLA lecture series is supported by practicing architects, planners and landscape architects in the State of Alabama.

Associate Professor and Director of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture’s International Studies Program in Rome, J.Scott Finn, has been invited by the Institute of National Architects in Italy (INARCH), to speak at a seminar in Rome that creates a dialogue between Roman designers and visiting designers.  The event will be organized in the same hall where Carlo ScarpaBruno ZeviLuigi Moretti, Lewis Mumford and many other luminaries of the foremost discussions on architecture in the 20th century have spoken as well.
