I hope this newsletter finds you well. The IMA invites you to attend the Monorailex 2016 Conference and Specifications Workshop in Cologne, Germany, from Thursday, September 15th to Sunday September 18th (more information under Events below). The conference conveniently occurs a few days prior to the International Trade Fair for Transport Technology, Innovative Components, Vehicles and Systems, InnoTrans in Berlin that takes place on September 20-23, 2016.
In 2013, the International Monorail Association established a goal to assemble a set of performance specifications to standardize the design, construction and operation of monorail projects. During the proceedings of the IMA Workshops in Wuppertal, 2014, we started that task. Early in 2015, the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) APM (Automated People Mover) group reached out to IMA with a request to incorporate our comments to the ASCE APM-21 document and in doing so addressing specific monorail related items.
The work to compile comments to ASCE APM 21 is underway and our meeting in Cologne will dedicate time to produce actionable comments to the ASCE committee. In fact, the ASCE APM is currently going through a process called re-affirmation, where the committee review the entire document, section by section. Changes are proposed to take into account the latest advances to the practice of APM’s and regulatory changes that occurred since 2013.
With that said, we have the unique opportunity to have our voice heard in short order. This is of importance to the members of our association being; operators, designers, OEM suppliers, and practitioners, because it provides us with an opportunity to incorporate our comments into future editions of the ASCE-APM 21 document.
Monorailex 2016 will be the forum where these comments will be debated and consolidated. Do not miss this chance. Most of you have received our calls for papers for the event. Shortly, we will be sending out additional details of the Monorailex 2016 conference as well as registration information. We will be delighted and excited to see many familiar faces there.

Panama and Japan seal deal for $2.6bn monorail
The agreement with the government of Japan will fund the construction of the metro system’s Line 3, which will be the largest project in Panama since the expansion of the Panama Canal. The monorail system will be the first in the Americas to use Japanese technology.
Line 3 of the Panama Metro will be 26.75km long with 14 passenger stations. The project is set to begin in 2017 and come into operation by the end of 2021.

Monorail will Connect Metro with
Mexico City's New Airport
The director of the Public Transport System (STC), Jorge Gaviño Ambriz, announced the possibility of connecting the Metro with the new airport planned for Mexico City by a magnetic monorail, utilizing the existing corridors for lines 1 and B.
The Mexico City government official said the idea is to transport users of the new air terminal quickly and viably, and also to serve mobility in the capital.

Lagos to Construct Marina-Ikoyi-Lekki
Monorail Project
The Lagos State Government monday disclosed its plan to construct a monorail that would link Marina, Ikoyi and Lekki, stating that the project would cost $1billion.
The commissioner, who put the cost of the monorail project at $1 billion, added that the project would be designed “to later connect to the Lekki rail project which is also in the works”.

Submission Information and Guidelines
- Abstracts for papers must be submitted via email to Heather Brown in PDF format by May 27, 2016.
- Submissions must meet requirements of proposed category.
- Papers are due by July 15, 2016.
- All presenters must register for the conference and pay the appropriate registration fees to present at the conference.

ATRA - Advanced Transit Association
The Advanced Transit Association (ATRA) is an international association of active and retired transportation professionals, engineers, architects, urban planners, students, educators, and enthusiasts that promote the consideration of advanced transit options. They do not endorse any particular company or system, rather they strive to serve as an objective information resource to help decision makers navigate the often complex issues surrounding transportation choices particularly as it pertains to new technology.
Fundamentally, advanced transit is the transportation of people (and goods) in a way that is superior to conventional transit. It seeks to improve transit by applying some, or all, of the following techniques:
- Using small vehicles accommodating people traveling to one, or very few, destination stations
- Locating numerous stations on sidings (offline) so walking distances are short and vehicles not destined there can pass by without stopping
- Running the vehicles on a network of dedicated guideways linking all stations and separated from pedestrians and other traffic thus enhancing safety and alleviating surface congestion
