Greetings from the CTL!

Hello! We're in the home stretch - the last few weeks of the semester. This is often the busiest time of the semester for grading, so I wanted to share some resources on grading with you in this month's newsletter. Our CTL website has a variety of teaching and learning resources that you can access at any time using this link. I looked through the grading resources on that page and found this link to Vanderbilt's Center for Teaching and Learning that has some great tips for making grading more effective and efficient. If you take a look, let me know what you think!

In addition to those resources, this newsletter has information about an upcoming conference for adjunct faculty, including a Call for Proposals to present scholarly work. I have also included details about additional ways to support students through the Career Center and an upcoming workshop through the IDEA Shop. The Adjunct Spotlight focuses on Erik Talbert from Communications and Foundational Studies.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at any time should you have questions about teaching at Boise State. In the meantime, happy teaching!

Best,

Adjunct Faculty Conference Call for Proposals

The Center for Excellence in Teaching Excellence at Kennesaw State University is organizing a conference spotlighting the work of part-time faculty. SPACE: The Symposium for Part-time, Adjunct, and Contingent Educators (SPACE) is a conference where part-time, adjunct, and contingent faculty can present their original scholarship in a peer-reviewed, professional setting. SPACE also provides a venue for contingent faculty members to share what they are doing in the classroom and to connect with their contingent colleagues. It will be held on June 18, 2016 in Atlanta.

SPACE is issuing a Call for Proposals for this inaugural peer-reviewed conference. They seek proposals that demonstrate the variety and quality of scholarship being conducted by part-time and contingent faculty and the innovative teaching practices demonstrated by this growing group in higher education.

Supporting Students through the Career Center

We know that adjuncts at Boise State are interested in the success of their students, both in school and beyond. That is why we wanted to make you aware of another way you can help your students succeed - as a Career Volunteer with the Career Center. The Career Center consistently calls upon professionals to connect with students as they navigate through their college experience. These connections can take many forms. By clicking on this link you will be shown a list of options to consider. Please check all that you might be interested or have expertise in.  And please identify yourself as adjunct faculty at Boise State, in the current job title field, so we can recognize your work. If you have another current job title, please include both (ex: Product Manager/Adjunct Faculty).

Once you have filled out the form, the Career Center and the Alumni Association will send you program updates on a semiannual basis and call upon you occasionally to connect with current students individually or in group settings. Checking a box is not a commitment on your part. It is an indication that you are interested in volunteering in a particular area. Should circumstances change or time not permit, you can always pass on the actual opportunities as they are presented to you.

If you are interested in learning more, check out the Career Center website at http://career.boisestate.edu/ or contact Debbie Kaylor at 208-426-4351 or debbiekaylor@boisestate.edu

Upcoming Workshop
Beyond Words: Visual Choices that Deepen Learning

Will a hot pink background on my slides keep students awake? If I bold, italicize and underline, will viewers actually read the content? User-friendly digital technologies allow us to easily incorporate images, graphs, and color into our communication. However, academics, even those with up-to-date technology and pedagogy skills, often lack the requisite design and visual literacy skills to make effective visual choices. In this workshop, we define effective visual communication and explore its relationship to learning. Facilitators will share basic design “grammar” for improved visual presentation of materials and discuss sustainable visual communication strategies to support teaching and learning.

This workshop will take place on Friday, April 29 from 12-1:30 in Riverfront Hall, room 301. The content was produced by the Teaching and Learning with Technology Group and redistributed with permission by BSU Instructional Design and Educational Assessment. To register, click this link

A free parking code is available to adjuncts who attend this event. To get the code, please contact the CTL at ctl@boisestate.edu.

Adjunct Spotlight: Erik Talbert

Erik Talbert is finishing his second year as an adjunct at Boise State, where he has led discussion sections in UF 100 and most recently taught Comm 268, Introduction to Video Production. He has also taught post production and media aesthetics classes at Oregon State University.

Erik brings his varied experience in video production (including reality television, documentary and broadcast sports) to the classroom, where he teaches his students about the skills they will need in their professional lives. "I've spent my life in the northwest, so I have a pretty good sense of what kind of production work is available here, and I try to share that knowledge with my students."

"What I like about teaching is seeing my students go on to find work and experiences they enjoy.  It's especially meaningful if they do stuff related to what I teach, and even better if they exceed things I've done."
